Cleaning Ecco Shoes

Recommended Posts

I recently got several pair of Ecco golf shoes, and I really like the comfort. I play early, and the shoes get wet, and really show water stains. I clean them after every use, but the stains are still there. I hate having comfortable, new shoes that look like garbage. What can I do to keep them clean?

I took my Biom Yak Goretex Eccos to Scotland because I absolutely love them for walking. They are a light beige. They turned lavender after they got wet. Ecco replaced them and sent me their Repel product to treat the new pair. They said they should be treated a couple of times before the initial wearing and then regularly thereafter. I told them that with all the little paperwork that came in the box I did not see that mentioned.

This.

I have 3 pairs. The beige look the worst. The two black pairs I have the discoloration isn’t as noticeable. But the beige looks like I pulled them from the trash and I’ve only wore them 4 times.

If anyone has any good cleaning tips (too late for repel which I wouldn’t do anyway, they are golf shoes, they are going to get wet) I’m all ears.

I have 3 pair of Ecco World Class leather-soled shoes and although I agree that they are very comfortable Ecco shoes and particularly their World Class models are not very well made. I am partial to leather soled shoes because of the rigidity/density and honestly their looks. You might remember those shoes of the 70s and 80s with plastic soles that when kitted out with metal spikes you could feel right through your cheap plastic soles when you walked on concrete or other hard surfaces. Admit it when you were just out of college and money was tight so you skimped a little on your shoes so you could buy that new driver.

Anyway, back to the Eccos. I have over a dozen pair of classic leather soled golf shoes. Along with the Eccos I have: Footjoy Classics & Classic Dry Premiere, Johnston & Murphy Aristocraft (with that cool stacked leather heel), and my favorites - Etonic Ultimate. These all differ from Eccos in significant ways: quality of the leather uppers, heel material (plastic) and sole material and construction. As mentioned above by foozledbaffy and supported by lots of other comments and product reviews, their leathers aren't very good at handling water; they often get discolored and they leak - even their Gore-tex models like my World Class shoes. The heels on my shoes are plastic, which isn't a bad choice to make a shoe lighter but after a couple seasons I went to change my spikes only to discover that when I tried to unscrew the spikes from the heel two of them wouldn't come out - they would just spin. The spike anchor in the heel had stripped out. The material(s) in sole are also very suspect. They tend to dry out and crack if you're not very diligent with shoe care. But perhaps the biggest problem is the construction of the shoes. When you see the stitching around the edge of the shoe it's easy to think that this a quality shoe with a Goodyear welt construction as is used by Footjoy, et.al., and is used by the best mens dress shoe manufacturers like Allen Edmonds, Alden, etc. I am not sure what this process is called but I call it a faux-Goodyear welt, and this is reason that a $300 (I got mine on Ebay for less than $100) pair of shoes can't be resoled. Yep, after I had my little heel/spike issue I called Ecco customer service and they told me very politely and nicely that I was SOL. If you want to learn about quality vs cheap shoe construction methods go to YouTube - there are dozens of videos on the subject. For the record, all those I mention above and few others can be resoled and I have had it done on several pairs.

Now, about that pair of Ecco World Class shoes with the bad heel that according to Ecco couldn't be fixed or resoled. I had heard about a company in the Boston area that does all of Footjoy's repair and service work and I figured, "Why not give them a shot." I sent an email to LaRossa Shoe asking if they could resole/recraft this pair of Eccos. They responded that they could, gave me price and I sent him my shoes. When they came back I was blown away. They basically reconstructed and the refinished the whole shoes. They removed that Ecco upper, added a Goodyear welt and then put it on a Footjoy footbed (heel, sole, midsole, shank, etc.). I had this done over the winter but due to COVID-19, I haven't been out yet, which is why they're still like new. See pix
