Winter Ball

I'm playing some junior golf events after the High School season and It getting colder where I come from and I was wondering if there was a really solid performing cold weather ball.

To be honest there isn't a ball that will perform any better in colder weather. A lower compression ball isn't going to give you more distance in cold weather. Many like the lower compression balls in the fall/winter because they don't feel as hard as their gamers. If you swap out whatever you currently game and don't expose the same ball to the cold and keep them warm you should be fine. Since you are playing competitive events I wouldn't tinker with a new ball.

I like the Wilson FG Tour. Very low compression, you can find them cheap, and short game spin need not be sacrificed.

I have also used the ball from your picture. Z star has similar characteristics.

I've had good success with the Bridgestone E6 ball. It's lower compression - I believe it's the lowest you can buy? - and it performs pretty well too in the fall and winter. Plus I would keep a hand warmer in my pocket and rotate the golf balls every hole to keep them warmer. It actually works. Good luck.

Actually I think the Wilson duo is the lowest compression ball on the market right now but the e6 is very soft. I use noodles in cold weather mostly because they are cheap so I am not worried if I lose them in the leaves. I would agree with the poster that said you should stick to what you are used to if playing competitive rounds. The performance shouldn't differ too much.

I like to play the bridgestone treosoft in the fall/winter. Its very soft, and much cheaper than my normal gamer. I've tried others, but find this to be the best for me

I normally play a titleist prov1 in the warmer weather, which is a higher compression than my fall ball. As the temperatures drop, I switch to a top flight gamer. It's a 3 piece ball with a lower compression and a great feel. Just about all of the players I've golfed with in the fall switch to a lower compression ball in the colder weather because they have a softer feel than the high compression balls which feel more rock like as temps drop. So no matter what lower compression ball you play with, you should be more pleased with the results and feel in the cold.

I really like the 2013 ProV1. ( please, I like it- OK, no comments necessary). When leaves start falling, ground starts going soft, winds up and it's going to be below 60-a lot I just play what i've been picking up/finding and something really cheap, all summer. Hey, if you loose it so what. Bring out the good balls in April.

Callaway Hex Chrome is great when temperatures lower.

Lots of the older guys at my club use the 330RXS all season and I stockpile them as I find them to use when the temps drop under 60. Good ball for cold weather.

There are many threads on this topic.
It is not the ball itself that is affected by the cold. ( Although they feel better if they are kept at room temp)
It is the air itself that is the problem.
Cold dry air is considerably denser than warm humid air..
This creates more friction.
More friction slows a golf ball down faster than warm humid air, meaning it won't travel as far.
A ball hit at 40*F. will fly approximately 95% of the distance it would travel at 90*F.
Other lesser factors contributing to shorter distances in the cold are tighter colder muscles and to a very small degree, the ball itself.
If your "winter" ball seems to fly farther in the cold than your summer ball, you may want to consider using your winter ball in the summer as well.
