Hawaii / Oahu

Recommended Posts

Sitting at work, not focussing on anything but my upcoming hawaii trip. Visiting from 4 October going home early Sunday 12 October.

The regional boards seem dead so figured this to be as good a place as any other to post this. Mods please feel free to move if need be.

Anyone have tips on where to play? I'm going with the wife so would be up to have a round with other wrx'ers whilst she hits the day spas. I'm going to just go with rental clubs, last trip the airline lost my clubs, which scares the hell out of me and ruins the vacation!

I was thinking of royal Hawaiian? Is there any way to get onto waialae? I have played ko olina and turtle bay Palmer course on my last visit 7 years ago.

Royal Hawaiian looked nice, but I decided to play Ko'olau when I was in Hawaii. At first I wasn't very impressed - Putting green and practice range didn't seem up to snuff but the course is very challenging (has a warning sign like Bethpage Black does on the first hole), and has some of the best golf views on the island (mountains, rainforest, etc)

Edit: Oh yeah, and it was an amazing course too, practice area not indicative of the real thing

There are a few Oahu threads on the Hawaii subforum. There is some good info there, in my opinion.
I'm a fan of Kapolei, Ewa Country Club, and Coral Creek as they all seem to keep their courses in good condition and the greens are usually in great shape. On top of that, they aren't typically as busy as Ko Olina or Turtle Bay and they're all closer in travel distance.
I am not a fan of Royal Hawaiian - they don't seem to handle the moisture very well and the greens always seem to be a sandy, soft mess. You'll get some spectacular views and have some fun shots over the valleys and through the trees, but there's a decent chance you'll get rained on and a mongoose will steal your hotdog from your cart while you're on the green (true story).
Wherever you decide to play, avoid rush hour traffic.

Hey Noddy,
I moved to Hawaii in November from New Zealand. My schedule pretty much limits me to weekend rounds, but if you're up for it I'll be around during the dates you'll be here. May be able to get away for a half-day if need be.
In terms of courses, I played Ewa CC last weekend and it was in really good condition (bunkers could've been better but I was trying to stay away from them ;) ). Hoping to get out to Ko'Olau this weekend as haven't played there yet. Haven't played Royal Hawaiian yet either so that's definitely on my list.

Hi brad,

Thanks for the message! Might take you up on it - if you haven't played royal Hawaiian that could be worth a look? Otherwise maybe coral creek? I'm pretty open.

I imagine balls etc.. Will be cheaper so plan on stocking up whilst there any recommendations for golf stores I should visit?

Cheers,
Nigel

Ewa Country Club, has the best greens on the island. I was stationed there for 3 years and lived in Ewa. Kapolei is a good track as well as the Royal Hawaiin (my favorite course of all time). Some other good courses are: Hawaii Prince (tough if its windy, which is always), Pearl City GC. If you have any military connections, the Konoehe Klipper course has the best 3 hole stretch on the island (its on the Marine Corps Base), views comparable to Pebble Beach. I was never too fond of Coral Creek, it was quirky and it seemed that front and back were completely different courses, could never score well.

I've played a few courses out in Oahu. I've played both courses at Turtle Bay and would recommend the Palmer Course over the Fazio. For me, the Fazio Course seemed like any other course. Nothing too special about it.

I would also recommend the Royal Hawaiian. Beautiful course and you'll feel like you're in the middle of the forest. Only down side is, you might get rained on, but rain usually subsides within a few minutes on the island.

Have fun!

I would recommend staying away from Ko'olau as it is a piece of crap. It used to be a very well maintained course and a must play, but not anymore. Ewa Beach Golf Course is really nice and always in great shape. As others have mentioned Coral Creek is pretty good, Waikele, and Kapolei are also good tracks. Play out west to avoid rain.
