A Putter Story

I live in Baton Rouge, LA and my wife and I evacuated to Houston, TX for Hurricane Gustav. (And then ran like hell back home when Ike was headed for Houston) I was bored one day while in Houston and decided to go to a local Golf Galaxy store. I walk over to the putter section and look at the pre-owned putters. I notice a putter that looked a lot like one that I used to have. It is a Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Laguna Two. I pick it up and realize that it is in fact my old putter. I shortened it to 33" and put a Lamkin Crossline grip on it. That could be anybody's putter, but I looked on the back of the putter and saw some marks that I had made with a pocketknife to see if it could be refinished by an amateur like me when I still had it. Those marks were still there and although the putter had been beat up a good bit, all the adjustments I had made were still intact.

 

As I'm looking at this putter, I start to remember why I got rid of it and it all came flooding back. I originally got the putter when it came out in 1999 and used it for about two years. It was then that I met a girl that I really liked while I was in college. For our second date, we were supposed to go out to dinner, but being a poor college kid, I didn't have any money. Since I wasn't playing much golf at the time, I decided that I could take that putter to the local Edwin Watts in Baton Rouge and sell it. They bought it from me for $75. We went to dinner that night and I would later marry that girl.

 

So, I find this putter in Houston, TX, 8 years later and about 300 miles away. I had to buy it since it was obviously meant to be. I bought the putter back for $100 and I plan to get it refinished by the custom shop and have it around for a long time. I paid $100 so I guess I'm only out $25.

 

I just wanted to share this with ya'll and see if you've ever even heard of anything like this happening before. What are the odds of something like that? I don't think Scotty made all that many Laguna Twos in the Pro Platinum finish. I'm just glad to have it back. I gamed it the other day and made a bunch of putts.

THAT is a cool story! Seriously, what are the chances that this would happen...1 in a...well, a bunch.

 

I was waiting for the punchline to be something like "I didn't buy the putter, but I couldn't stand the guilt so I went back the next day...and it was gone!"

 

I'm glad it ended the way it should have.
