Thermal "Long John Underwear" Good For Winter Golf

rony

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recommend a good brand to purchase for playing Winter Golf? Our winters here on Long Island are really not too bad, and most courses stay open year round. Most of us do however set the "Bench Mark" at 40* and no wind. Between 40* and 50*, I'd consider a pair of LJ's, but don't know a thing about them!

I use under armor cold gear mock turtle necks here in Atlanta. It doesn't really get cold enough for the pants / leggings, but if it did, this is what I would use. They are much tighter and lighter than any type of traditional long johns yet the performance is there. I don't believe you want anything as thick and heavy as long johns, unless you are ice fishing or something like that.

Under Armour cold gear compression mocks and leggings.

Wear that under slacks, a sweater and ZR rain gear and you should be temperature and wind free.

Being in Florida there isn’t much call for them but when I get drug up north to see family in Ga I do the same thing, break open the drawer of under armor winter gear, way more comfortable than any thermal wear I have ever used, the fact they are tight and move with you like a second skin is the biggest benefit to me considering my normal golf attire is shorts and moisture wicking golf shirts that are all extremely light. After a few holes I really don’t even notice them.

Thanks very much guys, for all the feedback. I have seen the Underarmour in Dick's Sporting Goods. Pretty expensive, but it seems the general concensus is: They're the best. Guess I'll try them. Thanks again.

Ok undie guru's, with the slick materials of the cold gear. How in the crap do you keep shirts tucked in? Everytime I were the UA stuff it is a constant fight with the outer shirt.

Well....you take some duct tape....

No just kidding.

I don't know what to say. I haven't had that problem with any of the UA stuff I own. Maybe you have the wrong size? My UA gear is usually 1 size larger than my regular polo size, so for example, I usually wear a medium polo shirt with a large UA mock, which works fine because UA gear fits really snug.......maybe that is what helps???

I would check out a pair by Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, or North Face. They make high adventure or outdoor gear. They make some really nice silky style long johns that are light weight, very warm, and very comfortable. They won't show under clothing. I have been wearing them for the past 2 weeks while skydiving. They keep me very warm during my freefall when exit temperature is in the low teens.

+1

I wear Patagonia capeline and/or the Mtn Hardwear equivalent. Super light, close but not restrictive fit, and resists stinkiness. Good stuff, not cheap though. I have used it for everything from winter golf to climbing Mt. Rainier.

I recently wore UA's compression top with a fleece vest and Sun Mountain rainflex top in 28 degs. Worked fine, and was comfortable, but for the price, I think UA's compression stuff is over priced and maybe even a bit over rated.

Last year I bought Mizuno Breath Thermo mock tops at a golf sale and also on ebay for around $15 a piece and honestly I think they perform as well as anything out there. Rockbottom Golf is selling the Breath Thermo long johns for around $10 a pair. If they're made of the same stuff as the mocks, they'll be hard to beat.

When skiing I wear polartec 100 long johns under gore-tex shell pants, and for winter golf (sub 40 deg days) I take a similar approach with thermal long johns under Rainflex rain pants - super comfortable, wind proof and sufficiently warm without the bulk of wearing long johns under golf trousers. When the temps soar to around 50 degs I skip the long johns and just wear gym shorts under the rainflex.

Steve.
