Tours finally cracking down on slow play?

Governing bodies might soon ban the green-reading books that have become so prevalent on Tour. They're pace-of-play killers.

Most people on here will think this is true, even though he (Lavner) has no source and it is just a tweeted opinion.

If the PGA Tour took away green reading books, then their product would suffer immensely. They don't want that

The women are awful. You're a professional and you need a caddy to line you up for a full swing?

Why would anyone care if they read books on the green? They can do whatever they choose to do as long as they take 40 seconds or less. If they take more than 40 seconds, it doesn't matter what they do because it's too long.

Focus on the time, not the activity.

This has always been a bugaboo of mine. How would it go down if Butch was out on the course giving instruction to his players during a round? Or if Rory or DJ pulled out some alignment sticks and placed them along the target line as part of their psr?I realise a caddies job is to provide guidance and advice to players, but in pro tournaments it should be kept to yardages and green reading. Standing behind a player to check their alignment crosses the line, setting them up then walking away after they have set up is bending rule 8-2a imo.

As it turns out, I stand corrected. Apparently the R&A in a joint statement has posted that they are indeed considering limiting "green reading materials"

The proposed new rules will prohibit this.

Proposed Rule: Under new Rule 10.2b(3):

The current prohibition would be extended so that, once the player begins taking a stance for the stroke and until the stroke is made, the player’s caddie must not deliberately stand on or close to an extension of the line of play behind the ball.

Banning will have no real effect. If I caddie an event that doesn't have a greens book, I make my own, it's fairly detailed and it gets used during the tournament, the tour can't stop me from doing that, therefore they won't totally been greens books made by a professional company.

From watching the last few LPGA tournaments on TV, it looks like they don't do that anymore. Good thing, because it turned off a lot of viewers, including myself. Besides, I never once saw a caddy tell the player that they were not lined up correctly.

You want to see slow play pain, watched the LPGA Tour today. Wow, you talk about slow, Kerr made Na and Crane look like speed demons.

The thing about Kerr's slow play around the greens in the playoff, is that she made herself so nervous by rethinking everything 10 times that by the time she hit her shot, she was a basket-case and looked like a bowl of quivering Jell-O. Many of those puts and chips during the playoff were some of the worst shots I have seen at any level of golf.

She later apologized for slow play, but blamed the high winds for her taking so long. But the wind had nothing to do with the slow play around the green during the sudden-death playoff.

I see it definitely... She was slow playing her opponent. Its not the first first time she has done it... and probably wont be her last. She knows she can get away with it.

Hallelujah, a common sense approach.

I really get a feel for how slow they play (both PGA and LPGA although LPGA is the worse of the two) when I watch "featured groups"....in fact I was watching an LPGA event this winter, and I couldn't even watch the "featured groups" telecast. The pace was glacial. I turned it off.

I'm not sure if this represents a marketing a problem for the tours. Frankly, on the PGA tour, when there are enough groups out there that the guy in the TV truck can keep my screen busy with guys hitting shots, I'm OK. I do notice as the groups dwindle down to the last few, there isn't much for the network to do but show commercials.

However, if the tours feel the availability of the "featured groups" idea is way to attract viewers, they may need to speed things up. A lot.

FORE RIGHT!!!!

Sure, everyone has notes in their yardage books, that's all it is, notes in a yardage book.

They cannot dictate the notes you make in your book.

Didn't anyone see that the European tour is using Shot clocks? At least for one event this week, I think. turning it into a course wide "16th hole at Phoenix" atmosphere with Giant screens at all the greens and tees, etc...

Shot clock on the tee was only at 1 of the 6 holes. There was 1 fairway shot where a portable clock was and an American actually got a stroke penalty for not getting the shot off on time. :D

But not exactly the 16th at Phoenix. The crowd there was counting down out loud from 10. I think it'll be quite a while before that's considered "acceptable" on the Tours (real events).
