Put fairway woods back into my bag?

Hello All!

Two seasons ago I pulled my fairway woods from my bag and replaced them with 2,3 and 4 Cleveland hybrids. I always had trouble with FWs when it comes to hitting off the deck and slice. I hit the hybrids much cleaner and straighter, but feel short on long par 4s and par 5s. I’m a low-mid 90s golfer, natural lefty but was taught to play righty which has led to a slice that I’ve dialed back to a medium fade unless I mis-hit badly. I recently bought the M1 driver and was thinking about adding the M1 3 wood HL to my bag. I’d have to pull a club. Was looking for any feedback you could give about whether or not I should invest in the M1 3W, what club to pull, or any other changes to my bag that I listed details about below. Thanks in advance!

Which hybrid do you hit the least during a round? Which hybrid do you hit the most with yardages you have often? These might give you the answer!

If it was me, since your 3wd is probably gonna be 15 degrees, depending on your distances etc. I would probably pull the 4H since your 4 iron is similar degree wise. The other option would be to pull the 2H as going from the 3wd to 3H should be fine but again it depends on your distances and how often you use those hybrids during a round.

The benefit of the m1 fairway would be that you can move the weights to help a little with the slice. Do you think the issue stems more from the head shape of a fairway wood, or the shaft length?

I honestly think a lot of it comes from the angle my club face strikes on impact. Since I’m a natural lefty my right hand lingers sometimes as my top left hand pulls the club through resulting in some serious side spin. As far as striking the ball better I’m not sure which might be the issue. I’m 6’2” and typically have all my clubs shafted at +1”.

I got my 4H the least. The 3Wd I’m looking at is a high loft model at sits at 17* standard. However it is adjustable up or down by 2*. Personally, I like to use this adjustment to close the club face a degree or two, but that would result in my 3Wd having a loft of 18 or 19*.

Any club pull & replace needs to depend on yardage, not degrees of loft. I would find a simulator at local golf shop if possible and go hit. You should be able to find an M1 in used bag somewhere at the local golf shop so you can compare immediately without spending money. Learning to hit a 3 wood is essential for most golfers to tackle par 5s and one can benefit greatly from it.

I will get on board with everyone here and say figure out what yardages each of your Hybrids go and hit the 3 wood or 3HL and go from there. if you still have issues with your 3 wood there is nothing wrong with shortening the club up so you can get a consistent strike. you mentioned the 3HL if your miss is a fade you may want to go with the 3 wood and add loft which will close the face some in order to correct your open face angle in relation to path. just a thought

I just went through this with the 5 wood, still trying to figure out which club its going to replace the 18 or 23 degree utilities. I need to get back on the monitor to figure out my carry distances again since I switched the shaft in the 5 wood.

I only play a 3 wood, then go to a 3 hybrid that I can adjust up or down by 2 degrees if I need to. It gaps nicely for me and the hybrid gives me a lot of options from different lies.

I'd look at an adjustable 3 wood that you could gap with some of your hybrids and remove the hybrids that are closest in yardage to the 3 wood

In colorado, i used 2 and 3 iron over woods, but since ive moved to cali, i took my 3 iron out for a hybrid(19 degree), and have a cobra ltd 4/5 fwy that i hit like a humble champ, and just got an older callaway 3 wood that was pretty impressive the first time out. Now, i just have to figure out what to do with all my 2 irons....

I personally like fairway woods over hybrids, but suggest you take lessons and/or work on your swing. I've been playing this game for 18 years and I've had my share of golf slices with my driver back in the day but I've never ever sliced a fairway wood unintentionally.

I play three fairway woods. For me they go higher, farther, and land more softly than the commensurate hybrids.

I prefer fairways as well. I have a 3w 5w and 7w.

I don’t normally bag all 3.
