Let's talk long iron shafts

So I've been hunting around for a new ~2 iron or something with around 18-19° of loft for use off the tee or the deck.

My issue historically with these clubs is I don't hit them high enough off the deck so they become a bit of a one trick pony.

I initially started with an old TM UDI 2 iron with a PX LZ 6.5 Which I hit well but again couldn't get the height I wanted off the deck.

So I switched to a steelfiber 110 X and it has really brought it to life - feels great and has brought launch up nicely.

Here is where the ho in me needs some help, I've just grabbed a P790 3 iron (couldn't get the UDI as I'm a lefty) for a few reasons - it's shorter and is 19° both of which I like.

I thought about grabbing another steelfiber to put in but the guy who I'm buying it from mentioned the KBS TGI 110 was the same price - I know little to nothing about these and was wondering how they compare to the steelfiber?

Anyone have any thoughts about these 2? Or any other shafts to try for the driving/long iron type clubs?

Thanks.

Wan

I would honestly stick with the Steelfiber for two main reasons. First, you already have some success and familiarity with it which to me is reason enough to not stray. But second, the Steelfiber 110x is MUCH stiffer and stouter than the PX LZ 6.5 and on paper should be a much lower launching shaft. That means that either the 110x causes you to swing in such a way that you produce a higher launch or something about the weight or flex of of the LZ 6.5 causes you to produce a much lower trajectory. Either way, no one would ever recommend an X-stiff Steelfiber to raise your launch so the fact that it did that for you means you found something that works in a particular way for your swing, don't mess with it.

I've heard people say the steelfibers are very stiff but I don't feel that at all - and I think you're right it could be the weight.

I do have a reasonably late release also and had the same feel with modus 130 not feeling overly stiff contrary to some others experience.

My gut said stick with what you know but my ho says try something different!

Yeah the weight and flex are the two biggest differences. 15 grams is normally enough to go from "too heavy" to "just right" or maybe even towards the "too light" side for some people. I know for me I went from a ~130g Precision FCM 7.3 in my 4-iron to a ~117g Project X PXi which is a similar weight change and I loved it, much better weight balance and feel overall. If you have a reasonably late release then the lighter weight could he helping you release fully, in which case i'd experiment with things in the 100-115g range if you want to try other things out. If the weight is having the impact it seems to be then lighter may end up going higher for you, but possibly at the expense of control so adjust accordingly. Good luck!
