Minimal Golf

Hey All

I have to start with a quick story. This last March, I was paired randomly with a guy at my local course here in Fort Worth, Texas. His name was Mike, and he was super nice. I first noticed when he hooked his bag onto the cart, his bag only had four clubs in it, (Hybrid, 7 iron, wedge and putter). I wasn't sure what I had gotten myself into......he shot 75. It was easily one of the best rounds of golf I had ever watched someone play. Never missed a fairway and he only missed a couple of greens, but his putter was definitely his weak spot of his game, I think he had four of five three putts. While we were playing I got the background on him and the minimal nature of his bag. As soon as I got home I grabbed a Sunday bag out of the garage and put a 'minimal' bag together. I have to say, it is quite enjoyable to play golf with fewer clubs and force myself to create shots.

Anyone else play a minimal bag? What is in your bag.

My minimal bag is as follows:

Cobra Green Fly Z 16 degree hybrid

Cobra Orange Fly Z 25 degree hybrid

Adams Idea Pro Black CB1 8 iron

Mizuno JPX 900 Hot Metal Wedge

Snake Eyes Viper Tour 1 putter

There's several threads in here on minimalist golf - lots of good info and comments. I use 8 to 10 max and never miss the others. I occasionally drop back to 6 or 7 by taking the 7i and 9i out. Not sure how well I would score with only 4. Bag is light, too!

Shot a 1 under par the first time walking 9 since my hip replacement 4 months ago. I carried 8 clubs....

Driver , 4 wood , 6, 8 , pw , gw , sw and putter.

I love walking with just 8 clubs or so. I use a lightweight Sunday bag.

I went minimal this year and couldnt be happier with it. I do 7 clubs: driver, 5-wood, 5-iron, 7-iron, 9-iron 56 degree wedge and putter. I love it and there really isnt a shot in the bag that I can hit with these clubs. I honestly dont miss my 14 club set and cant see myself ever going back.

Taking every other club probably makes people hit more greens because you have to club up to get there...

last year I started only taking half a bag when I walk. Driver, 5 7 9 50 58 P. Usually shoot the same. Made me much better in windy conditions and on “imperfect” yardages when I have a full bag or in a tournament. Also started hitting bunt driver any time I needed 3w-4i distance off the tee.
