Buddies Golf trip

Recommended Posts

I organize an 8 man with friends in a Ryder cup format. Winning team got $600. There was 100 for tournament awards. We had awards for good and bad play and all were aptly named. Low net, longest putt, sidewinder (biggest slice/ hook) etc the last $100 went to a small gift last year was just some personalized golf balls.

format was 5 rounds. Two were stableford one was partner high/low game, one round alternate shot, and last round match play singles. The first three mentioned keep everyone playing the whole game. You don’t want a 7&6 result less play etc. all rounds were partially to full HC. Also points were awarded 1 for first 9 1 for second nine 2 for match against this keeps people in the game

just some lessons learned

have fun have fun have fun yes it’s competition but no need to lose friends

if traveling the same hotel makes everything easier

dinner was everyone for them self some people wanted a $50 steak others wanted something cheaper

have fun

get scorecards and mark then in advance for handicap purposes

did I mention have fun

I've done quite a few of these trips and have three set up for next year. Here are my guidelines that work very well for our older group which mostly has more money than time;

Always play your own ball. No scrambles or foursomes.Always use handicapsTwo four- man or eight-man teamsKeep the winnings gap between the player winning the most and the player winning the least to a reasonable numberAlways collect the wager pot in advance (I collect all funds for golf, lodging and wagers in advance of the trip)Never share rooms or bathroomsPlay only 18 holes per dayEach day is a fourball match, but you win, lose or tie hole by hole. So there is an incentive to win every hole even if you are having a bad dayI get the scorecards in advance (if the trip is in North America) and mark up the handicap stroke holes and other notes such as CTP holesPayout for the day is done at dinnerAll expenses are shared except entertainment, airfare, and caddiesI prepare a cloud based notebook for each trip which has all of the local rules we will use, the competition rules, the shared expense rules, the daily itinerary, etc.Pay a daily bonus for the low two-man team score and closest to the hole on one or two holesCall or email the courses before the trip to arrange for CTP flagsPay the green fees before the trip starts to avoid eight guys lining up at the pro shop to check in and payI pay the green fees six months in advance. That usually enables us to get advance tee timesPay the team bonus at the end of the week for the winners.

Presser 34, I run a similar outing (24 guys this year). Roadking has some guidelines that I'm sure work well for his group, but mine differ slightly and I will list and share ideas below.

We play 4 competitive roundsIndividual Match PlayModified Scotch FoursomesFourballScrambleWhile this will be the first time using the Modified Scotch with this group the reason we change up the format is we have guys that range from + to 30 in the group and we want everyone to enjoy their time away from their families (see 30 hcp trying to grind out every round)We split down the middle so this years teams will be 12 v 12I always choose the destination, with input from the guys obviously, but I am the dictatorNever share rooms and get everyone a room no sleeping on couchesLike Roadking said "Always collect the wager pot in advance (I collect all funds for golf, lodging and wagers in advance of the trip)Payouts are as follow (Use envelopes that are labeled to payout)First round individual match play (guys keep stroke score also for gambling purposes) Each match is worth one point$40 for low man$30 for 2nd individual$20 for worst score of the morning$30 for each of the two closest to the pins$30 for long drive2nd Modified Scotch Foursomes each match is worth one point$100 low pair$50 2nd place low pair3rd Round Fourball each match is worth one point$100 Low Team$25 for both closest to the pins4th Round Scramble$50 for low team$50 for worst team$20 for closest to the pin on second shot on 18th holeEach member of the winning team gets $150Pay out at dinnerTry to have other places for competitions whether that be a short course, putting course/green, bags, etc.We don't use handicapsHave two captains choose the teams, this is a great opportunity to get together and play golf or get dinnerAlso I order stuff for the guys to go home with. My brother designs a new koozie every year. Each guy gets a sleeve of ProV1s commemorating the tournament, and this year guys will get a birdiecorn divot tool. It's just a cool way to remember the trip. I can't tell you how many guys have the 1 ball that survived the trip displayed in their office/man cave/basement.Also get a trophy for the winning team, even if its just one you made Have fun

Consider if a Ryder Cup format fits your group or not. If lopsided after a couple rounds, there isn't anything to play for in the final rounds.

Like some others are doing, a new format and new partners each day keeps everyone in it and no team is stacked the entire trip.

If you do a Ryder Cup format, you should skip the alternate shot format.

One of the problems with a Ryder Cup match play format is that matches can end early and be anticlimactic.

When I run Ryder Cup trips, a player (or two man team) earns 1 point for winning the front, 1 for the back, and 1 for the overall. If a nine is halved, each player gets half a point. Additionally, the winner of the overall match gets one quarter point for how ever many "holes up" he wins by.

This creates incentive to play your heart put on every hole til the end, even if your only fighting to save/earn those quarter points.

This true and the reason I came up with a format that makes every hole important with no reason to ever coast to a win or be deflated because you have already lost with 3 or 4 holes to play. I pay each team member $2 for every hole won and $1 for every hole tied. This is applied all week long. So no matter how many holes you have won or lost, you have an incentive to always win the next hole and the next after that, etc.

Good stuff!

Our most recent trip (Streamsong) and Ryder Cup format resulted in the winning margin being 3/4s of a point. The points per nine and 1/4 points for holes won overall keep it interesting til the end!

I like the concept of paying each person that wins. May I ask how much money you start out in the pot. We will be starting with $1600.00 I assume the overall winners get a percentage of whats left in the pot since there will only be two teams does the losing side get a percentage?

Thanks for the ideas
