No Catchy Nickname's bag of new and old

Recommended Posts

Sort of updated WiTB. New wedges, a new putter to the lineup, and sort of a change with the irons. I've gone back to MP4s for the time being, but with something new in the shafts. I'm trying graphite in the iron shafts (ATTAS 115X) for the first time ever, and they're also 1/2" over standard, so the PW is 36" and the 4i 39", which seems to work for me. Still trying to find something to replace the R9 4w. I really want to try the SIM fairway woods, as they look like an updated version of the excellent V-Steels.

LOL you ain't gonna ditch that trusty V-Steel----- That Yonex is a great putter--- I had one like it which was a ADX with the factory graphite shaft ( Pile find) I gave it to one of my young assistant pros who still games it. In fact it helped kick my team's butt in the last round at my home course before it closed. He said he felt bad about kicking my butt with it but I told him well it was only $5 and it was worth that to me to see him using it effectively. But yep I love the Mizunos and seems like you have the dialed in shaft wise to prevent you further injury

  • 1 year later...

I bought a new bag last week, so it seems like a good idea to do a new WiTB. It's kind of an "in betweener" bag, as I'm looking to make some new purchases (wedges and possibly driver), but it's been working pretty well for me so far.

The biggest change is that I have ditched the V-steel 7w for a hybrid, though this is only a temporary arrangement. The 7w will probably find its way back some time in July. Just not hitting it well enough off the deck at the moment.

I'm also bagging some Srixon Pro 100 irons at the moment (still got the Fg-62s and MP-4s, though). I bought the heads recently and shafted them up with some old TT S300 shafts pulled from some MacGregor irons. I managed to retain the nice long ferrules.

Edit: forgot to mention, to get the irons to a better playing length for me, I had them soft-stepped.

Also ditched the Cleveland RTX 4 Forged wedges. The current set up with the Maxfli and Callaway MD2 T-grind (56* bent to 57*) is also only temporary, but I'm enjoying playing the T-grind again. I'm looking to buy some new Bridgestone wedges, but my local golf shop can't get hold of any DG S400 shafts at the moment.

The 4i slot is taken by a current model Mizuno Pro Fli Hi #4. I weakened the loft from 22* to just under 24* (I rang Mizuno to check if it was OK. They said up to 1.5* is OK). It's shafted with the new version of the NSPRO 950 shaft. Thought I'd go for a lighter shaft for more clubbed speed, but I'm not sure I like it.

There's not that much difference in distance between the #4 Fli-Hi and my Romaro #4 hybrid, so I could ditch either one for a lob wedge should I need to.

Still can't get rid of that R9 4w. I think it's been in the bag over 10 years now. As for the driver, I may get the Srixon ZX5 at some point, but I need to test it first. Unfortunately, demo days have all been cancelled around here for the last year and a half.

I meant to use this thread as a way to post what I play in 2022 and how it affects my scores. Kind of use this thread as a place to record the clubs I used in each round and what score I got.

Being a club ho, especially an iron ho, I tend to switch out my iron sets rather a lot (I've over 30 to choose from). I also like to play with persimmons now and again....Anyhow, I've already played 3 and half rounds this year, so here's a bit of catch up.

First round was January 9th or 10th, just nine holes with my daughter. Started in the afternoon and finished in the dark as a "nighter". Conditions: decent for early January. Course length: 3,2000. Played persimmons.

6 out of 7 fairways hit, 6 GiR, 18 putts. Score: 39

Woods: Steel-shafted Mizuno Driver, steel-shafted Mac Toney Penna R1W 3&5.

Irons: Mac Muirfield 20ths 3-PW, VIP 2i

Wedges: Mac VIP SW

Putter: Taylormade TPA IX2057232054_WoodsJan2022.jpg.168284050bf162f523553b861e0b2066.jpg142792840_VIP2iJan2022.jpg.77bef8509ac32dd12818a34984870c4f.jpg483396373_Muirfield20thsIronsJan2022.jpg.082754e35128c7432faf3422e8a7cebd.jpg2067220911_WedgesandironsJan2022.jpg.61a8da81b2892d1b8036d632f125de86.jpg745760224_TPAIXPutterfaceJan2022.jpg.d6effc814cbfd6a0ffa2085d74c0d1ec.jpg738864788_KurateNaka9thholeJan2022.JPG.b2804dcf8c337a56fbc21b33363eb65a.JPG

Next was a round with modern woods and RAM Pro Camber Soles. No course pics, but I'll include some of the irons and hybrid below.

Weather was fair for late January, not much wind.

Course length: about 6,300.

8 out of 14 fairways hit,  GiR: 8. Putts: 35. Score: 81

Woods: Ping G400 Tour S shaft. TM R9 with Motore Speeder 6X, V-steel 7w with Tensei Pro Orange 70TX

Hybrid: Romaro i4 23* With ATTAS EX 85-S shaft

Irons: RAM Pro Camber Soles 4-PW

Wedges: RAM BeCu 53* and Bridgestone 56*

Putter: Odyssey #9

The main thing I remember about this round was that I couldn't get the distances dialled in with the wedges. I was short 5 times, long 3 times, and about right 3 times. decided to swap out the SW for the next round.

Next round was in early February. I've got some on course photos somewhere, and I'll try to upload them later.

Conditions: decent for early February.

Course length: About 6,150.

Fairways hit: 7/14.   GiR:  10.   Putts: 31. Score: 79

Woods and hybrid: As above

Irons: Mizuno ANGC Model, DGS400 @+1/2"

Wedges: Can't remember the gap wedge, but had an old Callaway  MD2 56* bent to 57* as the SW. Still couldn't dial in the distance, and most of my dropped shots were due to the wedges.

Putter: Odyssey White Hot #8

The Mizuno ANGC iron:

Last up for the time being is the round today.

Conditions: Around freezing (ponds around the course were icing over) and very windy

Course length: About 6,250 yards

FH: 8 out of 14.  GiR: 11.    Putts: 34.     Score: 79      Putting wasn't great today.

Woods: See below

Irons: Srixon Pro 100 with DG300 soft-stepped

Wedges: Srixon z745 A wedge (51*), Bridgestone HB-W 56* bent to 57*

Putter: Odyssey White Hot #8

Irons were great, the wedges were MUCH better today, but the putter wasn't great. Very cold, and wasn't playing very seriously.

Here's an older but slightly better picture of one of the irons. The Srixon Pro 100s are SOOO clean, and feel great as well.

I've been trying to kick the TM R9 4w out of the bag for the last 4~5 years, but I can't find anything that beats it. I guess I'm just too comfortable with it. So I've given up on looking for a replacement, and I now toying with the idea of the Srixon ZX5 in the driver slot. Not that there's much wrong with the Ping, though.

And yep I see that V-Steel 7 wood back in the bag. I know a little bit about Roma Ro clubs in fact I think you were the one who "educated" me on those. I also have that exact same Nicklaus 2 iron-- I did modify mine some where I could hit it. Had a brand new in plastic untipped Nike R flex steel shaft so I put it in. Yep you are like me in the respect you like to play different Vintage clubs for kicks and giggles and you also do like me modify them to suit you. Right now I have went back to my roots so to speak and am playing the stuff in my signature. I have gotten sorta serious again been practicing darn near everyday. The comp juices are flowing again trying to win the Saturday Shootouts no matter who my partners are. But it is not to the point where it is not fun nor will it be. A guy I know asked me yesterday since I was practicing so hard if I was going to hit the minis again? I told him those days and the high stakes gambling days are well in the rear view mirror for me. I did tell him though I was not above playing like a $2 Nassau or a $2 Round Robin or just playing for fun. I am getting my battered body back into shape and hope by maybe May or June be able to play like my stiffer shafted FC-4000s and persimmon woods again with no pain

Good to hear you've got not only your game but also your competitive spirit back after that bad accident. All my golf these days is just friendly rounds with my mates, and I miss the competitive side of the game.

The V-steel will probably never leave the bag, though I did change the shaft last year. The new one, a Tensei Orange CK 70TX, is much easier to hit straight and stays a little lower, so it's better in the wind and on the tight courses around here.

The RomaRo hybrid was a lucky find. I see a lot of people complain here about hybrids being hook machines and being too upright, and I've had hybrids like that. But this RomaRo is an exception, and I'm even looking at getting a 28* version of the same model to use instead of a 5i.
