Golfing in Scottsdale/PHX first week of June. To hot?

We are looking into a guys trip to the area and we are little worried about the heat. We are all from the Mid Atlantic area but travel to Myrtle and Orlando around June each year for a trip but this year we are looking at heading West. I understand that the AVG temp is around 97 the first week of June. Any comparison to playing in Florida or SC in June? I know the temperatures are not the same but i always hear this "DRY Heat" excuse. Any validity to this or is really that unbearable to play golf in June in AZ. Thanks in advance.

It's hot. I play, but I live here. I used to live in Fla and it's a WAY different heat. Wear a hat and drink water and it's not bad. It's not oppressive like Fla and shade actually cools it down. Play early. You don't sweat like back east and the ball goes forever. If you can get out to Wekopa or Sunridge Canyon it will be a few degrees cooler, but not much. Just be prepared for a lot of tight lies.

I actually prefer the summer months. The golf is so much cheaper, no one is on the course and the ball flies in the dry air and runs like hell on the fairways. Sunscreen, hats and water.

The heat is wayyyyy different than Orlando (I live in AZ but I've been to Orlando about 15 times in the summer). It will be hot but nothing like Orlando because there is no muggies. The rates will be cheap and it won't be super hot so I think that's a perfect time to come out here.

Make sure you drink water and only water, no beer or Gatorade. Also drink water even if you are not thirsty, dehydration can sneak up on you fast.

I agree with the hot and playable part. This is what it was like last year...
June 105+ every day on average high

100's started in May last year. It was the hottest summer on record. It felt like it too...

Get out at dawn. By 10:00 am it's over 100.

Here is the problem I see with your trip. The above posts are all correct in that you MUST get out and play early. Early to me is a tee time before 9am.

On a buddies trip, guys like to stay up late and drink. Early tee times, dehydrated friends, bad combination.

Perhaps your experiences are different than past experiences.

We are usually all about the golf so no late nights or drunken nights. Looks like we are now going to Tampa.. Thanks for the input for future trips.

There are some nice courses up in the hills, the temp is typically 10ish degrees cooler and a nice breeze.

I was in Phoenix about 5 years ago in March. It was hot then. What stood out to me was the lack of shade. The sun was out the entire day so you never got a chance to cool down. We stayed at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass that has 2 courses (Whirlwind Golf Club) and a casino there (its on the Gila River Indian reservation). Its at the southern end of Phoenix while Scottsdale is on the north side. It was a nice facility - the Buy.com tour plays an event there. I recall the carts had "air conditioning" on them. It was a cooler with a fan and hose that aimed at the back of your neck. The course also had misters every few holes. These sprayed micro fine water on you. I recommend you take advantage of them and drink lots of water. Also be careful of various creatures on the course. Rattlesnakes and scorpions are out there. I was told they like to stay in the shade but can be aggressive if you go poking around for your ball. Basically I stayed clear of anything that moved or that I heard.

I was on a conference in Scottsdale a few years ago the 2nd week of June. I teed off one afternoon where I believe the temperature was around 110 - possibly a bit higher. I'm from the prairies in Canada - while it was hot that day, it wasn't any worse than golfing a hot summer day in Canada with some humidity. Bring lots of water and you should be good to go. That said, for a golf trip, I'm not sure I'd want to golf in that heat for many days in a row.

We've travelled to Scottsdale the last couple of years in July and August. Temp has been anywhere from 105-115 mid-day. As long as I teed off by about 8:30 am it was just fine, and I played everyday.

Same cannot be said for our trip to Dallas in Aug. Same temperatures but the added humidity made it almost unbearable. That's why we now understand the "dry heat" in AZ versus places with higher humidity.
