There don't seem to be a lot of options for Charlotte area. Most of the responders are from surrounding cities and are asking ~$17/sqft to come to Charlotte and install. Southwest is offering $14 if I do it now because they're already here doing 2 others.

Well, the price to install a 650 sqft green at my place has quickly begun to climb outside the realm of possibility. The thing to keep in mind when installers quote you a $14 sqft price is that price includes the install only, not any of the prep work that may be necessary on the site to get it ready. When they do the install they want a flat, sodless slate on which to begin the installation. Any retaining walls or drainage/irrigation or fill dirt of whatever will have to be done separately. Any most installers don't actually want to do that work either so it will probably be up to you to coordinate with another landscaper. In my case getting the prep work done and then landscaping it to integrate with the rest of the yard was going to double or triple the price.

 

Another thing to bear in mind when talking to different vendors is find out what size turf their supplier provides. If the turf comes in 12' rolls and you want a 15' wide green then you could end up paying for a bunch of turf that goes in the trash. Various installers I talked with ranged from 12 to 15 ft widths.

 

All in all, not going to happen for me. Just going to have to live at the practice facility a little longer.

The greens are not hard to install. Maybe we should have a Club Byron green install crew. They could go around the country installing artifical greens for members...

Look at putting greens direct. The first putting green I had.Was a small green installed with sand and rubber top dressing. I did not like it.When it is damp outside the golf balls picked up the material. I replaced it with a non filled green with a foam backing. I had a cement pad poured and did the installation myself.The green lays flat on the pad.I use the green for putting only. I like this green much better,and there is no maintence.

Well I was unsuccessful in persuading the Boss that instead of a play set for the boys, a backyard putting green would be more appropriate... so playset it will be.

 

BUT we are doing all the prep work now that will be needed to convert the space to a synthetic green in the future. Grading, gravel fill, drystack stone retaining wall, etc. We'll put down a few layers of landscape fabric over the gravel under the yards and yards and yards of woodchips.

 

Area is about 25x30 feet or thereabouts.
