9 hole Leagues

I've been playing this great game for a long time, but have never been part of a league. Last Fall I got paired up with a guy who invited me to join his Monday night league. I'm looking forward to having something on schedule every week.

So it got me to thinking, what are the best things and the worst things about being in a league?

In the hot summer, when you really don't want to be out in the sun, you will be golfing. Or in any bad weather, for that matter.
Also, when you can not make it, for whatever reason, you have to get a sub. Sometimes this can be difficult.

To add to that though, sandbaggers. Like when 3 guys in a scramble league who are all supposedly 10-15 handicaps(for 9 HOLES) shoot 2 under par for 9 holes.

Yeah, those guys suck.

The hacker team that miraculously shoots 29 for 9, yet when every time you saw their group they were hacking away under the trees.

The jackass team who doesn't want to draw cards for teams because "they came together and they will play together." They also shoot amazing scores since all 4 of them didn't hit it past the ladies tees on the opening drive.

The jerkoff who tries to outplay his own teammates. 4 man scramble, "ya'll don't have to hit, I'm in the fairway/on the green/close enough for a gimme." Really? Really?

But, aside from those guys, folks can be pretty cool to be around.

[/quote]I imagine theirs a lot of cheating that goes on in scrambles. I am retired now, but worked for a large 8000+ company that always has golf outings going on in the form of scrambles and handicap outings. On one outing, on a paralell fairway next to us, a guy I knew but didn't have much respect for, hit his drive about 3 yards short of another golfer on the longest drive hole. He comes over and asks us which drive was longer, his or the golfer who presently was longest, on the existing marker. It was sooo evident his was shorter it wasn't even worth asking the question, and I told him so. Nonetheless, he picks up marker, writes his name on it, and places it at his ball on the other side of the fairway. I was going to squeal on him during the dinner we had but chose not to cause an argument and hard feeling the rest of the time I worked with him. I lost total respect for the guy, as well as the golfers who witnessed it. I don't have proof, but someone just eeked out longest drive over a drive I had about 15 years ago, and I didn't believe that situation either. Maybe he did? What is disappointing is that what one human will do to another to "gain the prize"!

The secret to having fun in a league is getting on a reliable team. There is nothing worse than standing on the tee box at your start time and realizing that you don't have a partner. I always try to get the reliable person, regardless of skill level, because losing before you hit the first ball is a terrible feeling.
