Golf Course Charlotte, NC (area)

I'm looking for a place to take my college team.

I'm the assistant golf coach at Bluefield State College and I'm wanting to take the players on a small trip so they can brush the rust off their game. I am looking for a course that has a nice practice area and would be willing to give the team playing privileges for a couple days. I am looking for something around the Charlotte area. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would look at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation, Ballantyne Resort, Cedar Creek Country Club, Highland Creek and Pine Lake Country Club. All these have excellent practice areas and are home to at least one high school team.

I concur, Olde Sycamore has a great practice area, and is really a good place to play. Ballantyne Resort is the home of Dana Rader Golf School, a Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher. Highland Creek is a great course, but the range is not near the putting green.

I live at Olde Sycamore and greens are terrible, but I would check with the UNCC coach to see if can get on nice private course.

In terms of private courses I can say with pretty high certainty that it would be impossible to get on at Charlotte C.C. or Quail Hollow. Quail is probably getting close to getting ready for the Wachovia and Charlotte is getting ready to close until November for course renovations. Carmel C.C. might be an option because they have two courses, a reasonable range and a big putting green. Not much to speak of in terms of a short game area, though I haven't been there in a while. Myers Park has abysmal practice facilities as does Providence CC. There are some newer private courses that might be recpetive to having your team at least play. The pro at The Palisades is about as solid a person as you can get and I'm sure if he is allowed to that he might be able to help you guys with at least one round. Courses out by the lake might be a good bet too. I'd aim for Carmel though if you want private, especially since it's near South Park so there is tons to do other than golf.

I would consider Skybrook or Birkdale. Both have hosted college events (and I know Birkdale still does....they draw a great field, in fact).

My brother played hoops at Bluefield College. He now lives in the Charlotte area. You have to play Verdict Ridge, Birkdale and Highland Creek. They are very good courses. Birkdale is an Arnold Palmer design.

Mike Hamrick is helping us out at The Tradition and the other IRI Golf Group courses.

Also we will be playing at Renaissance Park since it is one of the longest in the area and one of the few that hasn't aerified their greens.

The Tradition is a really good course, prac. area not the biggest, but the course and greens always nice i highly recc. it, that reminds me havent been there since Dec. need to get back. Am playing Rocky River sat. will let you know condition its pretty good course from back tees.

Charlotte is getting ready to add over 400 yards to the course and reverting the greens and bunkers back to Donald Ross' original plans. It's going to be amazing.

I played birkdale last year on vacation and loved it. Course was in great shape even though a tropical storm was just ending.

Charlotte CC should be amazing, they are going to spend 26mill on the course and clubhouse. They want to get a USGA event in the future is what I am hearing.

They already are getting the 2010 Women's Am as part of their 100 Years Celebration. The pro told me that they want the option at least to have some more USGA events there. The only thing I see being the biggest deterent from having a future US Am there is the fact that there is not enough parking. That wasn't an issue when they had it in 72, but I can see a US Mid Am there. The thing I found kind of weird about the renovation this year was that the Carolinas Am was supposed to be there this year. I can't wait to play it when they re-open it. It closes down on Tuesday.

They could have parking if they wanted it. They actually have enough land to build a second course, but it basically serves as just a buffer zone to the neighborhoods on the backside of the property

You'll enjoy the Tradition. It's a good solid track and puts a premium on accuracy. The range is ok, but the chipping green was pretty poor when i was a member there in 01/02.

 

Rocky River is a fun course close by too. So many to choose from. I lived in Charlotte for 4 years and probably only played half the courses in the area.

I played an awesome course outside of Charlotte last year http://www.regentparkgolfclub.com/. Its was about 30 minutes outside of Charlotte but its was premier with a great practice facility. Skybrook is also exceptional. Both with wonderful bent grass greens. However, Regent Park gets my vote. A very challenging and fun track.
