[attachment=2244899:diamond.png I am a net junkie, but with a purpose as I have outlined in other threads. I have optimized the use of my back yard by an adequate sized net supported by a PVC frame 7 x 8 with 18 inch angled overhang. I have set up a diamond shaped range using four alignment rods and practice shaping shots around them. This has helped me immensely and a lot less boring than just beating balls. My pitching distance is 45 feet. It has helped me I feel as I have gone from a 23 index down to a 16 mostly within the past six months. I get limited feed back on ball flight, but enough to see what is happening.

 how about putting in some grass. Your backyard looks golf practice poor.
That's pretty obvious. I've made some effort, but grass refuses to cooperate and I can't afford a renovation project right now.
:) Grass refuses to cooperate???? Didn't know it was that hard to grow. All I needed was seed, fertilizer, rent of rototiller and water. I did a whole bkyd for under $100. Tell the truth. Neither thumb is green?
something like that.
I don't know what it is. I experimented with a small section, had lush grass growing for awhile, and it suddenly died. Either diseased, trees took all the nutrients, hard to say. It really needs a whole new layer of topsoil. Wasn't for lack or excess of water. I guess my thumbs are only ash brown. Look at the green patch in the photo of the net in the background. That is now gone. The blades and roots seem to be still there, but they turned brown and will probably be bare unless it somehow comes back.

I think we ought to have everybody on this forum donate $5.00 and I will get a professional, or lay in some artificial turf.

I just picked up a net (Rukknet) and 3'x5' monster mat that is thick enough to let you use a real tee and you can tell when you've chunked a shot. I am thinking about getting a SC100 as well to give me a little data to work with too. Lastly I'm going to set up a mirror and tripod to see what I'm doing.

I figure at the least I'll improve my contact and positioning. I'll get to a real range and the course enough to make sure I'm not grooving in bad habits. The goal is to pull my index down from an 18 to a 11-12 by December. We'll see!

first winter with a mat and net and all i can say is that i'm playing better than ever and scores have dropped.

have a good net....Rukket
Good mat...Real Feel (probably the most important)
tripod for phone video

combination of these three and you can work on your swing.

no different than the range, you have to work on the right things and concentrate on making good swings and not just beating balls.

staying limber throughout the winter also helps. pretty nice to be able to get few swings in several times a week throughout the winter. how frustrating it used to be to watch youtube instructional video and hear something that really sticks but not be able to test it out. Also, pretty convenient to not always have to run across town to the range to get your nightly golf fix.

combine the above three with plenty of impact tape to see where you're striking the ball and work on consistency and there's no doubt mat and net can benefit someone. still not going to go from a 15 to 4 over the winter hitting into a net, but if you have the room go for it.

This is what I use in the winter and warm ups before heading to the course.

What size and cost is that pipe insulation? It looks like foam. I have cracked the pvc once.

Its pipe insulation, 2 inch. I had to order it from a plumber. I forget what it cost but it wasn't very much.

Considering a similar setup...would you mind providing some details as to what all you have there? Thanks.
I built the frame from 2 inch PVC from the local home improvement store. This way you can custom the size to the room you have. Mine is 10 feet across, 9 feet high and 5 foot deep on the sides. I first hung a king size comforter and in front of the there's a black mesh tarp and finally the net. The comforter and the mesh tarp take the impact and saves wear and tear on the net. I built it right to the ceiling so I could anchor it to the ceiling for stability.

It was actually very simple to build. I got the net from a place called west coast netting. They cut the net to the size you need.

If you need more info send me a PM and I can send you links to the thread where I built it from the beginning.

Id be glad to help you with the project. I've helped a few guys on here who wanted to build one like mine..

I forget who had asked, but I did a minor mod to my net frame. I replaced the bottom 90* elbows with T's, added a little extension to provide some support from behind and moved the footing out past the overhang. The foot now resembles half an octagon and is very stable, free standing, and less likely to tip in either direction during high winds. It withstood 45 mph gusts the other day. I need to find some pipe insulation, but I believe I need 1 1/2 inch.

My pvc size pipe is 1". I always have a supply of extra couplings around, just last night I busted one on the hosel and took out a good chunk of the right side. I have it down now, like a Nascar pit crew guy - I had the couplings on and glued and was back hacking in about 6 minutes.

No better way to spend a nice Midwest summer night, ballgame on the radio, and just working on a few things with my swing. I started at 6 pm last night, at 8:45 my wife yelled it was time to come in, I didn't notice how late it was getting. But in two weeks the days will start getting shorter again and this is the first weather here in Midwest that has allowed for some serious hitting.

I should include not all that time was on the mat, I have a grassy short game area I spent about an hour on too.

Hi VBB,

How did you make out with this goal? Did you take anything away from this that you can pass on to us?
