Slazenger BH Apex Set 1,3,4 & 2-9 Free!

Recommended Posts

I just came across a pristine set as described in the title.

The clubs were offered free during a garage cleaning, the sign said please take them.

They appear to be 1972 model Ben Hogan Apex Slazengers.

There was a little dirt on the faces of the irons, but essentially all the original paint is still in the grooves and virtually no rust. The shaft stickers are intact and in good condition, #4 flex.

I have cleaned them, and will take pictures tomorrow and post then.

Great find! Looking forward to seeing the pics. Are you going to play them ? You'll have to look out for a matching Equaliser :) Might be worth going to have another look in a dark corner of that garage !

I have a 40 inch Slazenger Apex 72 1-Iron that is a wonderful weapon off the tee.

Sorry for not posting pics today.
I took some but was not happy with the quality and focus.
Another session in a different light will be needed.

I read online that those sets did not include the E wedges - either pitching or sand.
The wedges were offered separately and came with different series numbers on the hosels.
The set I have are all stamped with the same number on the irons, and a similar number on the woods - 1 additional number.
I'll keep digging for info to find that out for sure.

Slazenger followed Hogan in the sense that an iron "set" consisted of No's 2-9 and had a matching id number. The 1 iron and any wedges were additional to the make-up and therefore had no number. Woods are the same. A set consisted of 1-4, with 5 & 7 being the optional extras.
I have Slazenger '72 Apexe irons, 3-9 [Number 71202]

Thanks for the info.

The numbers I have are:

Woods P43Y4450

Irons P43Y480

So this is consistent with a complete set, but if there are E irons I will certainly look to acquire them.

Sorry about the quality, I'll see about better ones.
Couple things to note here:
The irons have black paint fill on the numbers instead of the usual red.
The ferrules have a different colour combination than I have seen on others in (top to bottom) black, gold, red.

Looking at the images, they still appear to be in good condition. Again, nice find. Interesting about the ferule numbers...Those are more like the Hogan style where they start with a year letter.
FYI, my '72's have a red/blue/red band and the number 21202 [NOT 71202 as I mentioned earlier].... I also have a full set of Slazenger round soles - numbers 91202 green/gold/green band. -- This is here in the UK.

I heard sometime ago that there were two variants of the '72 apex - one had a more rounded sole but I'm not sure if this is true or if the other version was indeed just a bounce sole model. - I do notice a difference between the Slazenger '72 and the Hogan '72. - I'll post pictures later.

P

Nice wedges.
I did not post again here because I had nothing to work with for a while.
Have moved now and set up a shop in the garage.
I had a real lucky find on Ebay last week. Someone in Glasgow posted a set of these Hogans including the Equalizer and the Exploder, both in very nice condition. I asked him to sell me the 2 wedges and agreed.
Now I have the , took some pics but have not uploaded them yet.
They are identical to the ones in your post; same shaft ferrules, same colour scheme, and the made in England stamping in the hosel. I wondered if the blue center in the ferrule banding was for sets sold in Scotland?

Anyway, I will post updated pics shortly.

I would imagine that the colour scheme for the ferrules is for the model and not the country. The earlier round sole model had green and gold bands.
