Nothing un-PC about wanting to see US beaten

"The team spirit was epitomised by Wayne Grady, who was vice-captain. He was up 18 hours every day. He did everything for us, including cleaning our shoes. And he's a major champion! I found that uplifting, the fact that he would do whatever it took to give us the best chance to win.

"But the biggest motivating factor was simply whom we were playing. Never underestimate the unifying effect of an American opposition. Rightly or wrongly, non-Americans have a definite perception that Americans have a superiority complex. It's always nice to beat the guys who think they are better than you are."

A similar air of togetherness has always been evident in European Ryder Cup teams. Representing the relatively puny European Tour against the dollar-heavy juggernaut that is the PGA Tour is, quite naturally, a powerful motivation for the old world players.

I've always thought they had a chip on their shoulder toward us. It has obviously helped motivate them to beat ouor Word not allowedes as of recent. It was a great win for the US. It would be great to see us get up for the matches like the internationals do.

' A chip on their shoulder' is too strong a description IMHO.....

It's the whole 'Americans are the best' attitude (check out recent posts along the lines of 'The Nationwide is the second best Tour), whilst most Americans believe this, most that aren't..... don't.

That is the motivation - purely to show that at the least they(Non Americans) are the equals, which when you think about it, for this President's Cup, it was only a couple of putts that made the difference.

An example of why it is a 'friendly' rivalry, Checkout Appleby clapping DiMArco in the background when he(Di Marco) sunk the winning putt.....

This is Exactly the same for the Euros, anything mentioning 'Hate' etc. is a myth perpetuated by the press on both sides, the only reason that the Ryder cup suffers from this 'war on the shore' type mentality, is that the (gutter)press takes more of an interest in the Ryder cup.

This is of course my personal Opinion as a European(working for an American Co.)

Just like to add how much I enjoyed the pure sporting spectacle that this Presidents cup has been this past week and congratulations to the US on playing like a team that deserved to win. It was nice to see Mr. di Marco get the just rewards of sinking the winning putt(he's been through the wringer a bit this year) :fool:

Great post, Corky. The media has also gotten on this hobby horse about the US team doesn't gel as a unit, yada, yada, yada. Bull! Of course the players are disappointed when they or their playing partner is not playing well. They aren't angry. After (or perhaps during) the Solheim Cup it came out that the Euros play a lot of team kinds of events (4-ball and better-ball), whereas, any "team" competition within the US is generally straight singles match play. You're also correct about the "hate" stupidity that the press keeps dragging around. The US Solheim team said that after the competition, they (the US team) joins the Euros cause they throw the best parties -- win or loose. Can't quite see the same kind of feelings during a Ryder Cup, but certainly after a President's Cup. These guys are friends and neighbors, members of the same golf clubs, share sponsors and coaches, etc. As the man in New Orleans said, they (the press) are stuck on stupid.

Corky, I agree with you. I never mentioned the word hate. The euros get up for the event using the exact analysis you stated. I believe as well they think they have to show the americans they are just as good. That is what I mean when I use the term chip on their shoulder. The euros are smart enough to use this as a rally point to help motivate them. Also, I think it has helped the team unity. It is interesting to see how they have matured over the years as a group.
