Recommended Posts

As this is my first post I would like to say Hello,

Anyone wishing to visit Scotland and would like some golfing company, whilst the partners are intent on reducing the bank balance !!please let me me know. As I am a frequent St Andrews visitor, alternativly we have some great courses in the South, I would look forward to forging ties with you guys & gals from across the water and showing you some Scottish golfing hidden gems.

All the best Mark.

Dont worry about not playing the Old Course, all you will miss is the 1st 17th & of course the 18th holes, should you wish to play you can always take your chance on the ballott, it is nice to say you have played the Old regardless . I hope you have in your itinerary Kings Barns 10/10, The Castle Course 9/10, The Dukes (Park land) 8/10 and if you plan to venture further afield, there is always Carnoustie 10/10. There are numerous courses around Edinburgh to play, i have a good frend who is the Pro at Craigmiller Park GC he could use his contacts should you wish to play the following Archerfields, Dunbar, Gullane 1 2 & 3. Let me know your thoughts I would be only to glad to assist where possible. Last and not least the post golf activities are top notch in both Edinburgh & St Andrews, unfortunatley the town at SA could be a little quiet due to the University being on summer retreat ;-(

Edinburgh has some nice ones too like Musselburgh
Is this the Royal at Musselburgh as I have a friend who is a member there, I have not yet taken him up on his offer can you recomend ?

As for the central belt, I played the Dundonald I gave it 7/10 and I would like to play Western gales & Glasgow gales again can you reccomend ?

If anyone feels Flush, I would play Trump again and again 10/10.

You won't be disappointed with your choices, however I haven't played Scotscraig nor Longniddry. You will enjoy NB and L & L links, due to recent run of excellent wee spell of weather all courses at present are in fabulous condition. I can garuntee you will not be disappointed. If you do have time for another round check Ladybank.

We are 12 guys coming to Scotland on the 21st of August
Playing:
21st: Carnoustie Championship Course & Burnside
22nd: Castle Course (36holes)
23rd: New Course (36holes)
24th: Planning on playing New Course or Castle Course again, even considering Crail, is Crail worth visiting?
Very nice, personally I would choose the castle out of the bunch to play again if the following courses were unavailable: Dukes and Kings Barns for me KB is the pick of the bunch in St Andrews. 54 holes at one course when in StA is a shame when there is so much too offer within fife. Alternatively you drive past Ladybank on the way home. I commented on another post due to t be recent weather all courses will be in excellent condition, you won't be disappointed.
If I can be of any further assistance please post, thanks M

Are you playing 36 at the Glen to save money using the day pass? The Glen is a nice course, but rather than play 36 there I'd go to the West side of town and play another 18 at North Berwick West Links, or play one of the nearby courses like Gullane 1 or 2 or Dunbar

Crail is definitely worth playing. Two very good courses. Here's a link to photos.

Balcomie Links at Crail is a lot of fun and won't break the bank, play it every time I have been to Fife. If you are in Fife, you must drop the coin and play Kingsbarns. It is flat out a must. A great late afternoon 9 is the course at Anstruther, south of Crail. Great 9 hole trek. If you can find a member, the Golf House Club at Elie is also a blast to play and great views.

Have fun.

Just finished 9-dayer doing a more northern swing-

Day 1 - Arrival day - did a round to stay awake at Braid HIll in Edinburgh - not bad and very reasonablly priced.

2 - Kingsbarns - guys I was with loved it - I thought just ok. Nice course, nothing historic or special - pricey.

3 - New Course - good - worth the play

4 - Old Course - enough said - classic.

5 - Carnoustie - 2d favorite on the trip - exceptional. Stay at hotel if possible on property.

6 - Trump International - least favorite of the bunch. Uber-expensive ($300+) and again, to me, nothing special.

7 - Cruden Bay - #55 on World list according to GOLF magazine - not sure why. Good track, nice people, if not in area wouldn't drive up there for it. Lots of blind shots - need caddy to have a chance & they are just HS/college kids.

8 - Royal Dornoch - Favorite of the trip - everything one would expect from golfing in Scotland - golf, clubhouse experience, the works - great.

9 - Castle Stuart - good. Best caddies of the trip and again, excellent overall experience.

Just mho. bpm

sabram- yeah i think we are just doing a day pass there. we will definitely entertain youre recommendation and look at the other courses for the afternoon round. we drunkenly threw the trip together this winter without a ton of research(a little but not a ton). as posted above we've heard mixed things about kingsbarn.

Nice one. Hope you enjoyed your trip? Interesting thoughts on some Courses there, and couldn't disagree with you. Pretty much nailed it. Only 1 disagreement, and that would be with Cruden Bay. I loved it, but I can be quirky like that!! Lol.

Buy or borrow? Hard or soft?

I still need a travel bag although I have a buddy that may loan me one. We will be in a motor coach so a hard case isn't impossible.

Good idea, bad idea?

I am also thinking about dark spikeless shoes to wear as my everyday shoes while there. Wear them with pants and it my golf shoes need a break, I can wear my walking around shoes.

I have a Goretex jacket and storm fit pants. I picked up a bottle of DWR to renew the waterproofing. What other jackets should I take 8/15-8/24.

I am thinking 3-4 breathable pants and hand washing/rinsing them. The same with socks, undergarments and shirts. Doable or do I need more.

What should I pack in my carry on? What should go in my golf bag and what should be checked?

What can I take? What should one take that they may not think of?
