I have a problem

On my take away I've noticed that I am opening or fanning the club on the way back. I have been practicing this week and everything is blocked right and very high. I have even had the occasional shank, that is the worst sounding shot I've ever heard. So any advice on take away tips? Has anyone ever had this problem and how did you fix it?

When you say opening or fanning the club, do you mean you are rolling your wrists (i.e. letting the back of your left hand point towards the sky...assuming you are right handed)?

There are lots of training ideas on how to stop that and I think some of the pros should comment on that as opposed to just plain ole me.

Personally I've always pretended there was someone directly behind me and I am trying to hand them the clubhead. This forces me to reach straight back instead of allowing the club to roll and curl around my body and get flat. I have never had the ability to hit the ball well with a flat swing so by virtue of reaching straight back, my club goes up on a much steeper (higher) path and I get a much steeper swing...which works well for me. I also concentrate (on the range) on my left hand and ignore everything else. I like to keep my left hand cupped and the back of my hand facing my target as long as possible.

Again, I would seek the advice of one of the pros as my techniques work for me and not everyone. Hopefully some of the pros will comment to help you find that ideal position.

I like that take away thought leech. My swing has been flat due to the take away problem. mikpga, I don't think my path is the problem. My divots are usually pointed just slightly right of the target. Thanks for the tips guys!

I have fought this problem for two years! One thing that I am trying to work on is keeping my arm and my upper body in sync with each other. I would always try to get my arms around faster than my chest and I would roll my forearms and get VERY flat.

On video, the butt of my club would point 10' outside the ball. I haven't videotaped my swing lately but I *think* it's getting a bit better.
