Current Course Conditions in SC/NC (Myrtle Beach/New Brunswick)

Recommended Posts

Going to be down in Myrtle Beach from September 2nd to the 15th playing alot of golf. Just wanted to hear from the locals the current conditions/conditioning of courses i may play---i'll be booking some rounds on a 7day/48 hour window.

Possible Courses: Thistle, Rivers edge, all Barefoot Courses besides Norman, Heritage, Founders Club, Cape fear national, carolina national, leopards chase, tigers eye, sandpiper bay, st. james plantation (all courses) bald head island, oyster bay, crow creek, the pearl.

I have played most of these courses other than St. James plantation courses, Sandpiper, Carolina National, Tigers eye/Leopards Chase...so if you'd care to comment on these courses as a whole...layout, staff, etc please do.---Thanks in advance, Tipsy

I vacation down there very summer, great place.

Sandpiper - Do not play, kind of dumpy
Tiger's Eye and Leopard's - Great tracks played last 4th of july.
Thistle is in great shape and the owner has been plowing money into it. But they are going to Bermuda greens so call.
Carolina National is a fun course, big fariways big greens 27 holes.
Bald Head - They just redid the course, its fantastic great day trip

Oyster Bay - Great Deal, $45 beer, lunch, golf. Great layout.

This is the time of year for Bent greens to be punched in NC so I would call ahead.

Take some pics at Bald Head Island and share. I've been there many times but never got to play.

Carolina national is a lower tier course, but fun nevertheless. The changed the grass on the greens last year.

Big cats, leopard is a tough track, always in good shape.

Have fun!

Bald Head is a great, beautiful course. Check out the videos on youtube/website pretty stunning...made me want to go last year and my foursome loved it. Depending on time/weather etc. im gonna make an effort to play it again next week...i think the my golf card i bought gives a nice discount there too

If you have the time, I always recommend Cape Fear National. It's a ride but it's worth it.

The only courses I've played recently are Man O War and the Surf Club. Surf Club is letting outside play but I'm not sure what they're charging. Man O War is in fantastic shape right now, I would definitely recommend it.

My friend has booked the Witch on the regular package, hopefully same conditions as its sister course man-o-war. Not a fan of Surf Club, played it last year and it was in horrific shape (Especially for a private) charging full price/unapollogetically---and overall i thought it was a pretty boring layout for the hype it gets. Played both Bald Head and Cape fear national last year and thought they were phenomenal. Unfortunately Cape Fear is doing green punch this week, so i'll have to get my Tim Cate fix elsewhere

Yeah, Surf Club went through a real bad stretch there for a while. They replaced their super this year and it's making a huge difference. I agree it's not really worth what they charge outside play.

As for the Witch, I've heard it's in just as good a shape as the other 2 across town.

Good News about The Witch..I played Tigers Eye today teeboxes, fairways, rough all awesome. the greens were a bit chewed up. just looked ugly in spots (i think it may be damage from the past polar vortex winter/some circular cup sized patches of black soil etc.) , but it was a great value and they held approaches very well. I'm Playing Leopards chase tmrw, let u know what its like after.

I played the Witch, Man-O-War and Wizard last year. Loved the Witch. Gators everywhere. The. Glenn's are awesome too.

I'm going for a weekend trip in October. We are playing Indian Wells, Burning Ridge and Black Bear. Any feedback on those courses?
U may be disappointed with that grouping after having done glens package / witch/wiz package. They aren't on the same level

Thanks for the honest feedback. I'm not going to worry about it too much. It's a yearly trip I take with some good friends. It's always a good time.

I would avoid Founder @ Pawlwys, greens are slow and shaggy up keep is average at best. IF you are playing to check it off your list fine, if not pass it by.

I'm looking for projected condtions for the following in mid October:

Witch, Wizard, Man O War, Pawley's Plantaion, and Grande Dunes.

The first three are pretty set in stone, however I am open to alternatives to the other two.

Would only like to travel down towards Pawley's one day, as we are staying up near the airport.

We are also trying not to repeat any past courses, so here is the list we have already played:

All Barefoot
All Glens
Wild Wing Avocet
Kings North
All Legends

All help is greatly appreciated!
