Hogan Percussion? or PC5?

Recommended Posts

I have a question for all of those here smarter than me....(which is pretty much everyone, so please chime in). Getting back into the blade game, and found these in my hoard. Normally, I shy away from playing older clubs, especially if they have the older leather grips with the wooden cap. I have heard a lot of horror stories about what happens to those shafts from the inside out.

I found these, and they have relative new rubber grips in very good condition...except the 4 iron, which has a swing-rite on it that is just shot.

Can anyone identify these? They look like the PC5 from 1966, but to my eye...it also looks like a 1967 Percussion. In point of fact, I am looking at pictures I had previously saved, so in truth....they might be the same iron with different names. Here are the pics:

The easiest way to tell is to measure the hosel length. The PC5 (1965-1966) had a 3" hosel. The PC7 (1967) had a 2.5" hosel. The PC7 also had a round toe whereas I believe the PC5 had more of a square toe.
PC7 it is....2.5" hosel length. I am looking forward to giving these a poke thursday. I will admit that underslung hosel is giving me the willies. Need to be mindful of that....

Looks like the father to the '84-'87 PC's!!!

I thought that too at first glance...

I have to admit being pretty stoked to try these out!

these to me are way more blade on blade than the 84-87pc,s which look more traditional .
Definitely blade on blade....the profile kind reminds me of the PC, the biggest difference is that these look concave...where the pc was convex. The relief of "outer" blade seemed a bit greater on the PC towards the toe, than on these. Almost like they wanted to remove a bit of weight from the toe of the PC. Also, it didn't extend all the way to the sole on the PC either. The Pic i have of the PC is at a different angle, and I haven't had my PC's for a while..

I have a complete set at home. I bought it for 30 bucks from a guy whose father just had these standing in the attic. Unfortunately the original grips are just wasted and I can hear epoxy jumping up and down in the shaft. I hit some balls with one of the clubs and it was fun, way beyond my capabiltiies but fun. I got the feeling that the sweetspot is terribly close to the heel, which in some way is good because my ussual miss is right next to the hosel ;)

I'm currently in the process of cleaning up the clubheads which have turned a bit dull looking. I restored shine to the first couple of clubs and with a repaint in the original style they look classy. Just need to get them reshafted some day...

I took the 6 iron for a date this morning....mercy this thing is sweet!!

I re-gripped the set, and the shafts seem...ok. The operative word in that sentence is "seemed". Honestly, I bit nervous using a shaft that's more than 40 years old...but externally, there is zero pitting and when looking down the shaft...they don't look corroded.

The way the 6 hits, I am absolutely putting them in the bag. The shafts are "N" flex, which I believe fell between Stiff and X-Stiff (closer to stiff). I think I read that on here someplace. Anyway, I might reshaft them over the winter. They have those infernal pins...(grrrr). And the 4 iron looks like someone might have tried to get the pin out. I think they beat on it with a length of chain before giving up....lol.

Still looking for something to do with specs. A buddy told me he thought the 2 iron was 20*, with the Equalizer being 50*. Not sure about that...and by his own admission, he isn't a Hogan expert.

Great clubs....great feel...and thankfully, I don't have a steep swing. Wicked leading edge on these things...
N was special order shaft, it was called Hogan personal shaft ,being the same flex he used

It's got a kind of funky step pattern....almost reminds me of an old apollo shaft that I think was called the "Shadow"....not sure about that. The step pattern is high. and relatively tight. Flex wise...it "felt" really good.

 • 8 years later...

This thread is sure old but it's got some great comments, so back to life!

Bought some 1965 pc5's a few years ago, N shafts, minus 7 iron and E. Magically over the winter the 7 iron and Equalizer, in N flex, showed up piecemeal on Ebay. 1966 model but other than the frosty back, IIRC exactly the same as the 65's. Slapped some NOS 54 gram Soffties on them. Took them out Sunday, with temp in the 40s, those N shafts (prob too stiff for me?), figured it could be a long day.

But, what fun! They look good, and somehow I hit them in the middle of the face all day. Staying in the bag for awhile. Fun!!

Well, we know the sweet spot isn't in the middle of the face. But you all know what I meant!
