8802 Graphite shaft

Picked this up for next to nothing yesterday. Not expecting it to be worth anything, just curious if anyone has seen one before.

Back to the hickory days. Stamp "special" on something and you can charge an extra sixpence. Crafty timber-loving mother-thumpers.

It's quite a nice shape, a little different to a standard 8802. Very light at 437 grams.

I've realized I probably should have put this in the classic clubs sub-forum. Sorry - new to this side of town.

I love 8802s, keep an eye out for them on EvilBay, and I've never seen one with a graphite shaft...

I've the Yonex ADX which I'd guess weigh's about the same, that currently sits at 469 grams and that's including a tonne of lead tape. This is the best feeling putter I own, yet it doesn't see much game time as I loose my feel with light weight putters when I'm playing with heavy clubs. The jury's still out on whether I try a steel shaft out on it.

The feel is noticeably softer and the sound more muted than steel. The flex is also fairly soft. I haven't had a chance to get on the course yet but feels great on the living room floor. On course trial tomorrow.

Ummm *ahem* The Superior Student of Golf might take a steel shafted 8802 along (if available) to do the ol' C&C*, eh???

as an experiment i reshafted a no 9 style putter head with the stiffest grafphite shaft i had in my parts box. it felt great on the carpet at home but when i took it to the course -it had too much flex in it

This 8802 is definitely part of Wilson's Custom club works.

It's quite possible it was done in 1994, as described on the Custom fit page.

Thanks to all for the information and kind words. Took it for a roll on the course alongside a mid 70's 8802 and VIP forged 8802 style.
It's a really fun putter to mess around with - very soft feeling when struck well. Mis-hits were not treated kindly though... A combination of the light weight and soft shaft really gave some odd strikes. Still a nice putter and one I'll hang onto just for kicks.

or possibly it's godfather- the Wilson "Designed By Arnold Palmer"?

maybe even it's grandfather- the MacGregor Iron Master...with a "Charley Penna" stamp?

I have three versions of the ironmaster stamped Charley Penna. In general , they are on the light side and have a very small sweet spot. I think that the 8802 is a better putter, but both are not forgiving and are for fast greens

[/quote]I don't have any Charley Penna stamped ironmaster putters but lead tape does work wonders for me on the regular Ironmasters. They are for darn sure not forgiving at all and will tell on you in a heartbeat.
