Cold weather golf in the South

I had a couple firsts playing a round in the cold yesterday. I live south of Atl and the temp was in the mid-high 20s.

1. I normally play the Chrome+ and love it. I didn't think about the weather's impact on the ball, and found that I wasn't compressing the ball whatsoever; lost 1-2 clubs of distance. Got that sorted but it took a couple of holes for me to realize what was happening. Yesterday I would have loved to have a few low-compression balls in the bag. Made a mental note to keep some around in the winter.

2. Was hitting my approach shot over a small frozen pond and realized my ball was coming up short. I waited to see the ball punch through the ice, but instead it klacked right off the ice and bounced/rolled to the edge...lol....I am sure that's commonplace in the North, but it was a first for me.

Always fun to play in vastly different weather than you're used to, IMO.

As a Midwesterner I've played plenty of rounds of the frozen kind. It can be fun if the course is so frozen the ball bounces forever. It's actually not bad if it is sunny out and there isn't a ton of wind

I played a round a few weeks ago where the ground had been frozen for a couple of days and the temps were somewhere in the mid 30s with the windchill below freezing. I hit a great shot on the first par 3... absolutely never left the flag... then it bounced hard up in the air almost as if it hit the cart path and few another 20 yards into the junk behind the green complex. It went from what would have been a 5-6ft birdie putt and ended up being a double bogey.

The good thing is that if you hit a low penetrating shot with the driver and hit it relatively straight, you were going to get 40yds of roll out. That said, I'm not a fan of frozen weather golf.

You haven't lived till you've slipped on partially thawed ground, and slid down the side of a elevated green on your back side in front of your buddies. Cold weather golf beats no golf though.

Got to agree with this. I'll take sunny in the 20's over windy in the 30's. I know the windchill says it may be warmer but the wind just seems to take away to much warmth.

Here in memphis and saw balls on the ice once last year. It's a pretty funny sight. This has been one of the colder February's that I can remember. Past two weeks have been full of snow/ice/sleet.
