Tournament ideas ⛳️

Recommended Posts

Would appreciate any and all feedback. Trying to think of some different (less common) tournament ideas that may generate some interest.

What are your thoughts on the following?

One man scramble (fairly self-explanatory although I've never actually heard of anyone do this on our area)

- each golfer plays best of two shots

- go off in pairs so only four balls are being hit per shot

Two man scramble (again pretty self explanatory with the idea that it's easier to find a partner than a team of four)

- cuts down on cheating bc let's face it, not everyone is as honest as U.S.

Poker Tourney

- teams of 2 best ball or scramble

- teams start out with two unknown cards

- another card for each birdie

- eagle and the team can declare a single card as a wild

- team with best five cars poker hand wins

Of course each tourney will have skins and skill shots.

Has anyone ever done anything like this, especially a one man scramble? Thoughts on these? Favorites?

Thanks,

Folgs

On a buddies trip years ago we did a string round, people liked it. Everyone was issued a number of feet of string equal to their handicap. (15 handicap, 15 feet of string) The player can use the string anytime they want to move the ball as far as they want, cutting of a corresponding length of string. (move it 2 feet out of the rough, use 2 feet of string. In a hazard by a yard? Use up three feet. Miss a putt by 6 inches? Use 6 inches of string.

Every time you use some string, cut off that much, and it's gone for the round.

We have a tourney called tombstone, I think it goes by another name too. Everyone gets 72 strokes plus a % of their cap (40-50%). So I'm off 6 i get 72 plus 3=75.

The goal is to make it as far as you can with your strokes when I make my 75 th stroke I die wherever the ball ends up and plant my tombstone, whoever makes it the closest to 18 hole wins.

Part of the requirement is that you have to make a tombstone, we've had some pretty creative stuff, toilet seats, beer bottle statues, hand painted wood, cardboard, etc. Its pretty fun coming in the last few groups and seeing the last few holes littered with stones. Also it's grueling to grind over a 4 footer knowing if you miss it it could cost you the opportunity to hit a 300 yd drive at the end and pass a lot of guys up

We hold a 2-Man 3-Ball Scramble tournament at my club. Basically, you and your partner take turns hitting a third ball. The scores are usually comparable to 4-Man scrambles if not lower. We don't add any caveats like if you hit the second ball you have to take it. It is a lot of fun and moves at a decent pace with only 4 on a box. And really, who doesn't want a mulligan every other shot.

I've played in a couple One-Man Scrambles, but they have all been 1-mulligan per hole instead of per shot. That alone slowed the pace down considerably. I'm afraid a one-man scramble in which you got to hit two balls on every shot would be a brutally slow pace. Plus, the "per-hole" format brings in some strategy because ideally you want to save that shot until on the green, but can't if you hit a poor drive/approach shot.

The "per hole" format allowed scores to go plenty low as well IMO. I think a 61 (-12) won it.

Maddog we were planning on just going off in twosomes or maybe threesomes. Do you think that would change your mind about the pace of play or should we still be worried?
[/quote]

That certainly will help the pace. I wouldn't have any concerns about it as twosomes at all, and even threesomes would be okay... Would that limit your field of entrants though, thus also limiting your cash flow? Sending twosomes off every 8 minutes or so isn't going to generate the same kind of money as sending foursomes off every 10 minutes will. That may not be a major concern though if you don't think there would be enough interest for an entire field of foursomes.

Or if you planned on doing a shotgun start you obviously have a limited number of holes to start on. You could double up on a few, but more people means more entry fees, more concessions, and more money spent in the clubhouse. The more people you get through the door, the better. The downside becomes pace of play and making it enjoyable so that those people want to return. If you plan to do a true scramble so that each player has a mulligan on every shot, I certainly would go no higher than threesomes. If you go with one mulligan per hole, foursomes will be fine. It's going to be kind of slow regardless unless you do twosomes, but the players should understand that coming in.

Red, White, Blue tee alternating each hole as described. It gets crazy fun and gets people to look at holes completely different that the normally due. Also cross country was a big hit for us. This is when you set up the course for really long hole like 1 tee to 2 green. This takes planning a creativity. We set up the course for the members to play nine they ate lunch and we set it up to play the back nine with 9 different holes during the members loved it but it was a long day but awesome to watch and here the story's of the crazy routes and attempted shots.
