Hey gang,

Love reading all of this info about classic gear. It has me excited to jump in with both feet. There is an older, more traditional US public course near where I live that has been for sale for a bit. In the pro shop he has tons of "new" gear - older iron sets that have not been used. The owner is selling them at $70 for 8 irons and 3 woods ($100 if you want a bag with it). My first question is that is this a decent deal? The clubs themselves appear new and there are some classic looking blades and sets in there. I've got my eye on some palmer "the standard" blades, a few different hogan models and wilson models and a powerbilt Scotsman blade set. Also has some great putters too and a few untouched ping wood sets an titliest wood sets (all persimmon). Any direction on if these are good deals, and what to recommend to start with? Current modern gear includes an 11 degree driver, a 4 wd, 3&4 hybrids, muscleback irons in 5-pw and 50, 54 &58 wedges. Currently gaming the ping cushin putter I picked up there a few weeks ago and it's great. Thanks for any feedback.

For NOS stock, Palmer blades/woods/bag at $100 is a steal, as likely would be most of the other sets you can get there. Hogans, Staffs, and even Scotsmans are all in favor around here. However, I wouldn't let anyone here know where this course is before you go pick out what you want.

In fact, you may have some guys here ask you what sets they have and if you can pick them up one. You may also be able to buy two sets, sell one on eBay that pays for both, and enjoy a free set. NOS merch usually goes for some solid dollars.

And welcome here.

I own a set of '85 Standards myself, and they are excellent irons. Their are a number of different versions of the Standard, mine were only made that one year and they have '85 stamped on them. Really nice clubs, very playable. As a matter of fact I would go as far to say that they are the easiest blades I have ever used. The blade itself is kind of long from heel to toe, the ball flight is medium to a bit higher. This is important to me because I am a low ball hitter and I always look for a blade that doesn't hit worm burners. I don't play them much for hickory gets all the bag time these days, but my Standards aren't going anywhere. They are in my garage in my back up bag, ready for action. Just an FYI for price context, I bought my Standards for 50 dollars on the BST here on Golfwrx. They were in very nice shape with good grips.

Thanks for stopping by and posting. Good advice already offered by those above me. Plus with some research, purchasing at the right price, sets can be flipped online for a profit. Financing for future purchases. Because, it's a very slippery slope once you delve into the world of classic clubs. There is always another set/club yet to be discovered. Please keep us posted on your quest. And most importantly, we always like pictures.

Didn't catch it, where'd you say that golf course was at again?

I'm in agreement with everyone else on this.

Please snap pics and give us as much detailed info on the clubs as possible.

I'll not ask where this course is but I'm curious to know where you are located in a general way. Like I live in South Florida.

I do encourage you to get in there as fast as possible and make sure you have your checkbook and credit cards handy!

Not off topic at all in any thread with possible blade purchase content.

Always interested to hear what's new from the skunk works.

Bumping the thread back up- went and made my purchase: NOS palmer standard 85 blades 3-pw with tt s300u shafts, a spalding persimmon 2 and 4 wood, and a ping karsten carry bag. I bought a ping kushin putter from there a few weeks ago and will have to settle on wedge(s) later. I also took a few pics of some of the other NOS and once I get them off my phone I'll upload them. I was torn between three other sets of irons too (a nice tommy armour pga forged blade set, a maxfli Australian blade set 2-pw and a hogan apex blade set- this may become and addiction quickly). Thanks for the help all!

Tough choice in the irons there - those sound like all great options. Very smart move I think going for 2 and 4 woods. Good shopping!

So I'm a little late, but trying to keep my word- here are some pics of the stock at the course I talked about earlier in the post. This is only a few of the many NOS gems hanging out there. I had a rough time deciding, but after taking my 4 year old son golf for the first time two days ago at another local par 3, I'm glad I went with the palmers. Played bogey golf for my first time out with them on the par 3 nine. They felt amazing - I had no idea it'd be that fun. My son played all nine holed tee to green. I was a proud papa.

Can see plenty of "classics" from the post-persimmon era when I was starting to play golf. Lots of Taylor Made Burners, System 2s, System 2 mid-size, probably the odd flex-twist shaft in there.

Is that a Founders? The Judge?! Maybe a T-zoid titanium?

These were the much fancied drivers of my youth. I had an old firestick with 11.5 degrees, before moving to a Lynx Boom Boom which I adored and used for donkey's years. My last non-titanium driver was the smaller green T-zoid. The Boom Boom was the choice one of this lot, for me.

And now you can get retro hats?!

Looks like jr. already has great form, look at that chest to the target follow thru. Ten years at the most before he gives dad a run for his money. Did you acquire all those clubs pictured? If so, would be interested in any Hogans that you may be considering moving (especially partial sets). In before HAB.
