Determining flex

Hey all. The 3wood I bought has no shaft band. Is there a way to determine flex without any fancy equipment or is it a fell kind of thing

If that doesn't work, have your sister, girlfriend, wife, mother or aunt give it a try. If they crush it long and straight, give them the club and go find another with a shaft band on it for yourself! :lol:

If the club feels like rebar and you can't load the shaft properly then it's too stiff for you. I think that the bend profile of the shaft is likely a more important consideration than the actual flex. I've played clubs with everything from medium to regular to firm to stiff and had pleasing results, but not across all shaft models. Hit them and judge by the ballflight and how they feel. I can hit S300 just fine despite my 85-88 mph driver swing speed. That's not supposed to be possible if you follow current club fitting doctrine.

Scomac that is correct. You can create different profiles within any brand of shaft to create what you want. To the OP try it and see if it works for you.

Is it an older club? Macgregor model stampings almost always indicate the shaft flex. Onwilsons there is a shaft band as well as a very thin colored ring 2/3 of the way down the shaft. Black is R and red is S, if memory serves me. You could also take OT to a local pro or club,aker. he can put it on a machine and tell you in a nano second.
Just hit some balls. If it feels good and the ball flight is satisfactory, who cares?

Compare it to other steel shafted woods you have and may have the flex labelled. The longer the distance from the tip to the first step the softer it will play.

I tend to agree with the others that is it more a determination of transition than SS for shaft consideration. I am finding that I am using more of the "run it up the flagpole and see if it flys" method when dealing with vintage clubs and shaft offerings. Don't be afraid to experiment, or Not to dismiss a club/set because of shaft if you find something bargin wise. You may be quite suprised at the playability of the club.
