After the quest!

The quest has finally run its course for you. You did not find the grail that held the 15 yards of power. Now your back to the original dilemma; The back tee boxes are just too long and no fun, the front tee boxes are too short and the needed challenge in not there. So you ask yourself: What do I do now? The Pro at my course (my former 1st Assistant before I retired) and I solved the problem. We even went as far as having it printed on the scorecard. Take the 9 most difficult holes (per the handicap rating) and play the forward tees, play the other 9 holes from the back tees. The guys loved it! Sometimes you already have what your looking for you just can't see it. This format can be used at any course on the planet. Just take a minute to mark the scorecard before you tee off, so everyone knows the correct tee for each hole and off you go! Try it, you will most likely find a new/old golf course you like again. We do this regularly and it makes the round much more fun, and realistic scores to par more achievable.

At college, our coach would get us to play off forward tees in practice rounds every now and then. Really good way to get used to making birdies, shooting sub-par and sharpened up the short irons.

Do you have a course rating/slope for this hybrid layout so scores can be posted for handicap purposes?

Of course we do, because this set of tees are on the scorecard. I'm old and move slow but I ain't no neanderthal. I knew without rating& slope people would eat me for lunch. :) As they say, "I was born at night, but not last night".;) Mike

I've played a few courses with 5 or so tees, and often one set must be like that - it's essentially alternating between middle sets.

 

I never analyzed it, but it might not only be difficulty rating, it might be based on forced carry distances, including approaches over sand.

 

Sometimes I play courses with a par 4/5 hole. This is usally in excess of 400 yards from the tees I chose. Since it's also usually a less-than-par-72-course, I will play the back tee and allow myself a par 5 for the hole.

Our regular group better known around here as the Miura Mafia will do that exact same thing on certain courses for certain holes. Yep that makes it fun for all. It is part of our "handicap" system for making different games. Good example on our home course in the summer most of us play the mid (white) tees. Now when the course is wet we play the senior tees.

I do this to mix things up. Several courses around here have added a 'mix' option to the scorecard with an official slope rating. It's a great option!
