Just ride what they call the Old 9 out there. It is 9 good holes that was originally out there The Blue tees for the full 18 on the West play at around 5800 yards. The old 9 Blue tees play around 3200 yards or so.

The holes I believe are 1-4 and 14-18 (someone can correct me on that if I am wrong). The other nine holes are built on land that probably could hold six good holes. But the original 9 holes out there are a good layout and would be great to play in the afternoon or evening for a quick round. I thought I heard that the West course had turned to Golfnow to fill tee times, but I don't know if that is the case or not. Don't know if that matters to you, but just something to consider there.

I think the 18 of the East and 9 of the West comprise a good stretch of golf for Alpharetta Athletic Club though. I hope you have a good round out there and keep us updated on what your thoughts are and where you end up.

The west course started out as a nine hole course and the good holes are the original nine. I was told one of the original holes had to be reversed. The other holes they just put in without thinking about site lines and were you would need to hit the ball. They just built some holes. Also I think the west course was primarily bought for the swimming pool, tennis courts, and fitness facilities. When the east course was sold and separated from Crooked Creek, the club was left with just golf. The swimming pool, tennis course, and fitness facilities at Crooked Creek stayed with the community. Last year you could book some tee times at the west course Golfnow. I don't know if that still is case. I think most of the members that are serious golfers use the west course when the east course is closed for special events or maintenance.

I live 3 miles from the east course and considering the quality of the driving range and practice area at the east course, that is were I spend my time.

I'm club corp and my home clubs are Windermere and Olde Atlanta. Insanely busy all the time. Conditions are average to good.

I would look at white columns/atl national or if you are on the other side of town CCOS or Laurel Springs. Laurel is never crowded. CCOS has a great men's locker room. Say hi to Tom Glavine.

There is also St. Ives and Standard Club. Both are non club corp. I've not played them yet.

i've been out on St. Ives' course but never played it (I was volunteering at a tournament). The course is in great shape and didn't seem to be crowded when we went to the course ahead of the tournament to place signs.

I've played The Standard Club and it's a GREAT course! The clubhouse and amenities (buffets all the time) are great! The staff was super friendly to me (I was a guest of course), and the location is very convenient to both North Fulton and Gwinnett. The ONLY issue I had was that the members seemed to be snobbish and not very welcoming. There's a lot of "old money" up there and they don't take kindly to strangers.

Here is my 2 cents for what it is worth.

I was a member at Brookfield, and I have friends at Atlanta National, White Columns, and The Manor. All of them say the same basic thing that everything has gone downhill at the club since the club corp buy out in their opinion. They are nice facilities don't get me wrong, but the service and food and all those sort of items have dropped off. I've played all 3 and they are nice tracks. I prefered Atlanta National for the course but it has no other amenities like pool/tennis if you are in need of that. My wife and I really enjoyed Brookfield when it was the old owner but again since club corp came it in it's gone downhill. One of the appealing things with Club Corp was the ability to play other course. I like to get out and try new course now and then and this was great, only to find out that you couldn't do it Friday from noon, until Sunday at noon (and even after noon you wouldn't be able to) play other courses. That was frustrating. Brookfield is under renovations and have brought in to many people to the club to help offset the cost, the entire club house is basically shut down until late summer, and amazingly they just raised dues 2 weeks into a 6 month construction project. I figured it was coming at the end but it was a head scratcher that they did it so early in the construction. Hopefully that gives you some insight into the club corp stuff clubs.

- Alpharetta Athletic has a couple decent tracks. Initiation was 1k and the monthly was around 350 or so last summer, so it's probably right around there now. Keep in mind one of the (I think the east) is public so anyone can play it you can book it right online, or at least it was last summer.

- Golf Club of GA This course is the same owner as horseshoe bend (Roswell). Initiation is 10k, and they are both good tracks with decent amenities. I have a buddy at horseshoe bend and the couple that owned the two of the these is getting divorced, and there is some consideration to sell, potentially to one of the kids, maybe to outsiders. So keep that in mind, it could be nothing, or it could turn into an issue.

- Standard Club 10k init and 600 a month. I think it's a decent club by all accounts but I dont know much about this one. We looked into it when we left Brookfield.

- Rivermont is a great track, less country club and more golf club. Club house is nothing fantastic but the course is great. Fees are on the website. Seems like a good bang for the buck.

- Country Club Of Roswell This is where my wife and I ended up, we really really like it. Course is kind of short but kept up well, Back 9 is gorgeous on the lake. Init is under 4k depending on age, and the fees are comparable with the others. I am not 100% sure what the full golf is as we are considered "Jr Executive" still. Food is also top notch, has a great facility, as well as good practice area.
