Golfweek Amateur Tour-St. Louis

Recommended Posts

Just joined and planning on playing 4-5 tournaments. Anyone in the St. Louis area playing this year or in years past? Is it worth it?

I'm also curious if they play the ball down or do they allow you to improve your lie?

Thanks!

I'm playing in the St. Louis tour. This is my first year on it. My buddy played last year said it was a blast.

They do play the ball down.

Which events are you planning on playing? I think I'm playing Missouri Bluffs, Spencer T. Olin and not sure on the others yet. Guess I better start playing it down. Tend to improve my lie most of the time.

Haha. So we can assume that 6.6 handicap is a little suspect then eh?

Yeah, I would say a little. I'm not sure how many strokes improving your lie is worth, but it is kind of a safety blanket thing. I guess I need to rip the bandaid off and see.

Keep a little log, it would be interesting following the difference. I introduced a buddy here in AZ to a tourney series and he did the same thing...combo of the pressure, playing by the rules, putting out and playing as it lies cost added 6+ strokes above HC. Could barely break 100. He went into the tourney series at 14ish and tourney playing HC was 20-22 for about a year. He has since worked hard on his game and improved tourney play to get down to about that same number 13-14 he started with.

So I would expect you would see something similar(not as drastic obviously), where maybe your tourney HC ends up being about 8-9, maybe 10 and then over time you will get back down.

Anyways...interesting experiment opportunity.

But, key is have fun and enjoy yourself.

Yeah, I would say that is about right. I think improving your lie is worth at least a few and playing in a tourney definitely adds some for most people as well. I'm going to start playing "real" golf and see what a difference it makes.
