How long can I hold out from hoing?

Putter gone bad
After an Indian summer of putting during which I told myself I'd fixed my putting technique issues and found the right putter for me, I've putted like a drunk monkey my last few rounds. To make it worse they have been matchplay and my opponents have gone from giving me putts to only conceding a hole when they are two shots down and I'm five feet away. Today, the guy even said as he picked up his ball, and I quote, 'not even you could three putt from there'.

I'm determined not to fall into the new putter quagmire, but I'm curious how long my fellow hos hold out when the putter goes south.

I only have a mild case of putter ho'ing. My gamer stays in place while lots of putters audition for backup. There are so many beautiful putters it's hard to lay off.

That said, if you are comfortable with your putter, don't change a thing. I used the same putter for 22 years (pretty much until I found this board, then I started ho'ing). Oftentimes we start missing putts because of us, not the putter.

I would switch putters during the middle of a round if the rules would allow it, and probably several times. I have also ditched one or more clubs prior to a round in order to add another putter to the bag, just in case one starts to misbehave during a round. I then usually turn it upside down in the bag or cart and use the other one, although I have been known to go back to the original offending putter if the replacement behaves even worse. I have also given up on whatever putters are in the bag, gone back to the car between nines (during practice rounds, etc.) and of course finished many holes or even rounds putting with wedges, 2 irons, hybrids, whatever. I have used hundreds of putters, rarely using one for more than a few rounds, but that is really nothing compared to the King, (Arnie) who has reportedly owned and used over 5,000 putters in his career... Personally, it keeps me motivated and interested to keep designing new stuff. :crazy2: Of course I know its mostly me, but I also know I perform better when the putter behaves! :)

I actually have a "system" in place to prevent me from ho-ing too much.

I normally putt with a Scotty Circa 62 #2 w/white Iomic grip. I will have usually 10-15 rounds of 20-something putts and then I'll have 2-3 whoppers 32-34 putts (totally unacceptable when you are a 3.0 index :pardon:). To get my stroke back I ALWAYS go back to an old school blade putter, napa/8802/palmer/sophia/tess whatever you want to call it, whatever manufacturer floats your boat. They all MAKE you putt and FEEL your stroke. I have a Ping Tess or Odyssey 8802 that I have sitting around in the garage, both cheap options, also nice to have when your brother-in-law throws his putter in the lake for a back up ;)

If you're a gate stroke putter, to me this is the best way to get your feel, distance control and stroke back. I tend to start over-analyzing my putting and get too mechanical on occasion, so this is a natural and cheap way to get it back!

Just say no to putter ho-ing...if you want your marriage to make it :partytime2:

For all those looking for a putter, I have one for sale! haha...

I've realized, the Detour models from Scotty work well with me. I dont know why, but it does help me keep my stroke inside square inside. But when I switch to my NC blade, for some reason, it just doesnt feel right. So with that said, I am willing to add to your ho'ing if youre looking for a putter... :partytime2:

Excellent post, and great method to get you thinking about putting, instead of putters.

My take on it,

Find a putter you really like, spend alot of $$$ on it and then stick with it. Get a custom slighter or a custom Scotty, and then don't change. I got a Red X had geoputters put a rainbow finish on it, had it custom shopped by scotty and now I have a putter that will never leave my bag.

Yeah, from time to time you may have a bad putting day, but it is all about confidence, get one that you have confidence in and then keep it. Switching putters all the time seems to be a poor move, even by the pros. It works for a time, but in the long run it doesn't seem to help.

Go spend some $$$ on your faovrite putter. That should stop the hoing.
