Which Wood? Newish Player

Recommended Posts

G'day from Australia!

I'm a very new golf enthusiast, took up the sport in January so have only been playing for approx 12 weeks or so

I have had some reasonable improvement after some lessons and now hitting 9 in around 58 (Not great I know, but from where I was it's an improvement)

I've just upgraded a heap of my gear with the introduction of a new driver and correctly fitted irons which will hopefully see me through until next year or longer. Have purchased an M1 Driver @ 10.5* and some M2 Irons 5-SW (Didn't bother with the 4 due to the strengthened lofts). With the new gear, I also have retained my Aeroburner 4 Hybrid (22*), SLDR Gap Wedge and a putter of course.

I'm now thinking it's time I add a wood to the bag, tossing up between an M2 3 Wood HL or an M2 5 Wood. Planning to use it both from the Tee box when my tee shots are running a little errant or off the fairway to get some distance back after a poorly hit driver or on those long par 5's.

The retailer has advised a 3 Wood HL however I'm thinking a 5 may be better given my inexperience in the game, having a club that is easier to hit and more consistent is probably better at this stage than going for the 3 HL and having a lower success rate of getting good contact.

What are your thoughts? :)

Thanks in advance!

3HL is a 4 wood, which some people swear by.

IMO, that is a great club for a beginner, intermediate and advance player to have in their bag. The extra loft will help get the ball in the air and it will be long enough to "go for it"

Good luck and demo both to see which one fits your swing. Keep up the hard work.

5W will be better gapping to the 4H and will be better out of different lies, but if you are going to use it off the tee a 4W might be better for the extra distance. If you are inconsistent with it you or if you want to take a little off you could try choking down. Taylormade fairways are great off the tee, but I like Callaway better off the deck.

When I was a beginner and when i was getting back into golf my go to club was always a 5 wood. It's easy to hit off all surfaces and usually goes far enough. Getting back into golf I hit an old taylormade systems2 5 wood about 210y. I swing a driver at 100 mph and currently hit my RBZ Stage 2 5w about 235. Short narrow par 4's are common on the courses I play, and it's my tee club. There is always room in my bag for a 5 wood.

I just recently upgraded my 3 wood from a cobra bio cell to a cobra F7 3/4 wood. I still plan to use my bio cell 5 wood. The bio cell 3 and 5 woods, IMO, were great to hit. Got the F7 3/4 wood as a upgrade. Really like the bio cell fairway woods. they seem to have very good distance, are forgiving, and easy to hit. Like the blue color

I've been in a funk with my fairway woods for sometime now.I can hit my 5 wood (18*) from the deck better than the 3 Wood (15*), but hit he 3 wood from the tee more consistently than the 5 wood. I got so bummed out that I bought a 19* hybrid. I have been hitting it far better than either the 3 wood or 5 wood. Accuracy is much better due to the shorter shaft and I haven't really sacrificed that much distance off the deck or tee.
