Prov1 vs HX Tour

comments from those who have played both would be great
Been an HX Tour player for the last few years. Play a lot at a windy course, it's a few $ less than a Prov1.
Ran out of balls and the pro shop only had ProV's available. I like it!

Now, I am striking the ball better my last few rounds, so I am not sure if this is the ball or my ball striking but,

1- the Prov1 seems to be 1/2 a club longer off irons. Others see this?
2- Doesn't seem to stop and drop quite as quickly as the HX tour. Could be the harder greens, maybe the ball?
3- Seems as long off the driver as the HX Tour. Hard to tell.

Any comments from those who have played both would be great. THANKS!

I've definitely played both balls many times and I can't tell a huge difference. I think the HX is a bit straighter when its windy and might fly a bit lower too. I'm being totally honest. My handicap is around 3.8 and that means I am pretty good, but I am not good enough to tell the difference in balls and shafts and such as some people on this board can.

I can definitely tell the difference between a Urathane 3 piece ball like a Pro V, HX, Nike One, B330, etc... and a hard covered ball around the greens and would never play with anything that I can't spin. Give me a Pro V or an HX and I'm fine. It all depends on how I'm feeling and swinging that day (and putting) as to whether I shoot 74 or 86.

However, one word of praise on the Titleist. I have found them to be far far more durable. You can scrape off the side of an HX with a solid 7-iron and a Pro V can easily last me through 18 holes. The trade off in durability is worth the extra money to me.

I carry both in my bag and I use one or the other depending on the amount of wind...

In my opinion HX Tour is much more stable with wind but less durable & harder around the greens than the Pro V1.

In terms of distance I'm not confortable recommending one or the other since it varies depending on the type of swing (speed, spin & angle)...

I played the Prov1x all last year, started off this year with the HX Tour, and am now playing the Prov1.

HX tour:

Pro's

Very long off the driver with very little spin.

Very good in the wind.

Con's

Hard and "clicky" feel off the irons and cannot spin this thing around the greens. I also didn't like the feel off the putter(too hard).

Prov1x:

Pro's

As long as anything I've ever hit with the driver.

Con's

Very hard off iron shots. If your swing isn't on the ball will fall out of the sky because of no spin. Impossible to spin around the greens and very hard off the putter.

Prov1:

Pro's

Very soft and solid impact feel off irons and putter. I can spin this thing as much as I want on shots 100 yards and in. Awesome out of the sand.

Con's

Moderate length with the driver but feels good at impact. Not great in the wind. Sometimes spins too much!

Conclusion:

I decided to go with the Prov1 as it is the best all around ball for me. I lose a little distance off the driver compared to the HX and X but not enough to worry. I actually pick up distance off iron shots. On the "scoring" shots in golf, I don't think there is a better ball.

Of course, JMO.

With out doubt, HX Tour is better. Better feel, better spin, more stable in the wind, a little more durable. Dont be fooled by the Pro v, just because of all the tour use and advertisments, what the majority might find the best, isnt allways going to work for you.

I doubt it!! For me, there is no question what the better ball is. I have tested both balls quite extensively and have found the Pro V1x to be better in all facets. You completely contradict your statement by saying without a doubt the HX Tour is the best than go on saying that what the majority might find the best, isn't always going to work for you. The golf ball is as personal as a wedge, putter, driver, shaft, etc. What works for one person might not work for another. The best way to find out is trial and error. Based on my trial and error, I find the Pro V1x to be best FOR ME.

If the thread were asking to compare the HX Tour 56 to the ProV1, I'd say that I personally prefer the HX Tour 56. Excellent distance and soft feel, particularly off irons. Great in the wind. And I don't mind paying less for the Callys. The HX Tour and ProV1 are very different balls and difficult to compare head-to-head.

I was sayin in my opinion the HX Tour is better. What i have stated are my findings. I think you misunderstood what i was saying, when i listed what i found i felt that the HX was better than the pro v in these areas. I was suggesting he simply didnt conform with the majority and play a ball that he found to be the best, not just one that is most used on tour.

If the HX.Tour played exactly how it does, but felt softer (especially around the greens), it would be the perfect ball for me. The only problem is, I would have to switch wedges to get the feel I like around the greens the way the HX.Tour currently plays (a bit too clicky). I play Rac Black wedges and prefer a softer ball off of them especially when compared to other wedges.

The new ProV1 is an excellent ball though; I have only played it a few times, but it seems to have a smidge less spin than last year and feel just as good, which is great news for me!
