What is the theory behind Pete Cowen's 2 thumb grip aids?

 Dave D

Recommended Posts

I see most of his guys use them, Matt fitzpartrick says it helps him set the club better, Clarke says it helps with left hand clubface control.

Is there a definitive answer?

The grip is a 2thumb rotate as can be seen here on fitzpatricks clubs. But it's not clear what angle the grip is set at?

Can anyone shed more info on this please?

Looking at where the logo is on the grips in the picture of Matt Fitzpatrick's WITB the grips look like they are fitted at a 45 degree angle turned clockwise from normal position?

284651_ORIG11.jpg

which would tie in with a couple of posts here http://www.golfwrx.c...gc/page__st__30

+1

Buddy of mine worked with him and it is one of Pete Cowen's favorite drills to practice correct release. I saw Henrik Stenson using it also on wedges. He had the grips on the shaft in an angled position. Meaning about 30* right if middle.

Guys the clue is the man stood behind him.

It's one of the drills Pete Cowen uses a lot.

That's a putter grip.

The grip is angled off to the right as you look down on it from address (clockwise I guess).

There are wedges with the grip on in the teaching bays at the Academy.

anyone else have any more info?

The only other pic I can find anywhere online is an old post on Alex Noren's blog (Which is a shame that he doesn't update it anymore), but sadly you cant really see the angle of the grip and no idea of the relation to the clubhead as its in the pic, although in his own words he says "The two-thumb putting grip put on sideways". which would tie in with what Dan said. Confusing!

90*. It's vertical rather than horizontal

Dan have you ever used anything like this?

have you only ever seen them at 90*, what would this be used for?

It's about 40 degrees clockwise from horizontal. About between 10-11 to between 4-5 on a clock face it would be pointing. In the halfway down position you get the back of the grip facing straight down to the ground and then release with the body while continuing to feel the grip pointing down as opposed to a hand flip. Keeps forward shaft lean and release from the body

I'm not able to interpret this comment. I'd appreciate further clarification.

Body release makes sense, much like swinging an axe with lag.

Wont work in North America.

Instructors here teach forearm rotation, squaring the clubface with the hands (right hand hitting) and right arm straightening.

Please list the golf instructors in North America who teach lag, and body release, rather than forearm rotation?

Here's a screenshot of how it should be fitted. Thanks to all who have posted in this thread I've been trying to figure this out for ages. I've actually got mine installed at the wrong angle, ive got it angled the opposite angle so the flat part would face the camera from FO at P6.

Will have to get that moved!

Who is comparable in America? KSgolf coach, GG? .dont think so...Maybe Leadbetter and his A swing.

The masses eat up his books, dvds'. America is about marketing not substance and another million golfers will quit the game this year.

Is there any particular Two Thumb grip that would work best for this drill?

I believe they all have, and all the ones I've seen in pictures use, the 2 thumb 'rotate' grips.

Really, you don't have to change your grip. You can use anything like a Swingyde or a Tour Striker Educator and put it on your club at a 20* angle and then just have it vertical at P6. It'll simulate the same thing.

would you not think there is a reason Cowen uses clubs built with the grips and not with swingydes?

and they teach to have clubface open 20 degrees at P6? and square the clubface with body rotation?

With Pete Cowans two thumb club, their students, as well as GGs' ,will hook the ball off the planet.

or turn clubface closed by 20 degrees, then take your normal grip, and hit a fade.

Probably because he has access to any equipment on the market and manufacturers will simply make him whatever he wants. Plus he probably has his own clubfitter on site. It's easy for him to slap something together in mere minutes.

For us, chances are that we don't have a random club and flat grip just sitting around. If you want to try this, it's much easier to just use something else to test it out before going through the process to make one which is why I suggested it. If it's something that works for you, then by all means make one.

I see your point, would think it'd be hard when doing a swing to feel the swingyde being vertical whereas with the grip you could feel?

not arguing at all I think your suggestion is a very good one, especially for those to try to see if the aid/ drills will work for your game before investing in making a club.

The MeandmyGolf guys have it on wrong. If you look at pictures of Clarke and Fitzpatrick, they clearly have the logoed, flat side down when the club is at P6. If you put in on like MeandmyGolf, the logoed, flat side would be pointing up at P6.
