Vokey Oilcan Wedge

Recommended Posts

Would like to 'refinish', any ideas
Today, I picked up a couple of used Vokey Oilcan wedges (52/8 and 56/14 deg.). They have a few dings and are showing a bit of rust. The oilcan finish is quite uneven. I understand many oilcan users just let them rust, however, I would like to refinish/clean them up.

Questions:

Can I remove the old oilcan finish by soaking them in coke?

How can I re-oilcan them i.e. to give them a more even finish?

As an alternative, can I 'blue' them?

What other options do I have?

Thanks very much for any help.

Questions:

Can I remove the old oilcan finish by soaking them in coke? Sure. but an easier way is fine sand paper, steel wool or a wire wheel

How can I re-oilcan them i.e. to give them a more even finish? Just heat the hell out of the with a heat gun and then dip them in your favorite oil. I prefer a penetrating oil

As an alternative, can I 'blue' them? You sure can,

What other options do I have? Plum brown or you can flame them with a torch.

i dont believe either will work. i think black nickel is a chrome and oil can is basically a scratch off finish

that looks nice hey...

when u flame them...do u need to take the head off the shaft or can they be flamed with it on?

is there any step by step to flaming a wedge?

It looks best to remove the head before flaming...

You can leave it on, but you run the risk of melting the ferrel, and the whole head will not be blued.

What I do, is remove the head, clean out the hosel, put a screwdriver in a vise and put the head on the end of the screwdriver, fire up the tourch, and begin heating. It takes a little bit of time to heat, but once it's done it looks nice. Let it cool, and add paint if you wish. ;) The heat will discolor any paint that is on the head.

If you heat it too long, the color will turn out kind of brownish, not blueish...

This finish will wear off in time and with use, but it looks cool.

i just coked my two oilcans, they turned out nice, i would say i might have used too little coke i used a coffee can and 1 can of coke for two wedges. i think a bigger can or maybe 1 can per wedge. turned out decent, about 12 hours of soaking. if you do it, just figure out a formula to use for the next time, i would do:

2 cans coke

1 LARGE coffee can /container

2 wedges

Make sure the coke does not go up as far as the hosel.

I would post a pic, but all i have is this lowsy camera fone and it or i am bad at fotos....

I just bought a black nickel vokey off ebay...it had some pretty bad wear spots on it so i wanted to try and refinish it. I used a torch on it for a couple of minutes and it turned out pretty good....looks kind of like an oil can finish...I might torch it some more to give it a more even and darker color. But definately take the head off...I melted the ferrule when I did mine, but it needs a reshaft anyways
