Got ya... Mine doesn't have that feature, because its not tournament legal. My buddy has a new one with removable slope, and he really likes it. Its a nice, beneficial feature, but club carry yardages are still needed to benefit.

I like mine a lot. Very helpful and speeds up play. I don't play in tournaments, but it sounds like the rules are changing and it doesn't have to be removable just able to be turned off.

I have not heard that slope rule was changing. Last I knew USGA wouldn't allow it regardless if turned off. As someone that plays in tournaments, I'd have problem with it being accessible, even if allegedly turned off. I know I wouldn't be alone either.

I have the version with the red and black faceplates to enable/disable the slope feature. After using GPS for years, a regular laser I'd figure I'd try it. Most of the time it doesn't make any difference, and if you played a flat course you would never need it. However my home course has two holes with raised greens. I often find that I'll get a measurement of say 140m to the flag, and playing 160m with the slope. That's a big difference. Sure this is stuff you learn playing your home course over and over, but it's still a shock to think 7i distance, oh but I have to hit 5i. Oh there's some wind, 4i.

If I play a tournament I would simply note any holes with elevation changes in a practice round.

Here's a link to the USGA quick take on the change. I think a lot of people will be uneasy about it. Going to have to trust strangers to do the right thing.

Thanks. USGA may visit the SLOPE issue but there's no indication it will change. I don't see HOW they will be able to determine if that function has been accessed during a tournament. Given all rulings must protect the field, I will be surprised if they change and allow slope to be present during a tournament.

This has gone kind of off topic, but the rule has changed. I'm not going to pretend I'm able to follow all the rules of golf, but this seems pretty clear to me. Here's another link:

No one is saying that they think of allowing it during tournaments. Yes they cannot determine whether that function was used during the round but they also can't determine whether you used your foot wedge or improved your lie or cheated in any other way.

If tournament usage is not being considered, USGA acknolwedging SLOPE usage for daily non-tournament play has no bearing on much anything. They might as well discuss average Joe use of the foot wedge and how sucking down a six pack or two during play may equate to sandbagging scores.

No the big difference is that you can use Rangefinder with Slope in Tournaments AS LONG as the slope feature is turned off. You don't need the changeable face plates anymore. So no one says that you can use slope in tournaments, only that you can use rangefinders with slope feature when turned off.

Not convinced that will get passed. Played in a lot of tournaments, including Amateur events. Too many people, including myself are not as trustworthy or idealist and others.

I believe it has passed, and has been effective since January 1, 2016.

A quick search got me this: http://bit.ly/23Xu5yn

Another search said R&A approved Laser for amateur events, but USGA hasn't as of yet.

does that show slope on greens? Like for breaking putts? I saw it advertised but not sure what it referred to.

No... just up or down slope from your standing position to the pin or what ever you sight on. Though I never used it, there is an iPhone app that allows you to lay your phone on the green and get a reading.

i think that it is helpful on courses that you do not play regularly. At the courses that i generally play at, i don't even pay attention to the slope number.

Just in my opinion i don't know how accurate the slope number is because it doesn't know how high you hit the ball.

Yes!! Finally someone hits the real issue. Slope calculations assume a certain carry and height of the ball going into the green. I don't have slope on my finder but i've played with a number of people that did. And my calculation (estimation) of the distance I need versus the slope reading have never been the same unless there's not enough slope to matter. I've always had to play longer distance than the slope said it was. And for some others, they've played less distance than the slope indicated.

They might help some but for the good player, not so much in my opinion.
