How to choose the right grip size?

My grip size for a tennis racquet is 4 5/8. I have long fingers. Should I go with a standard grip or a larger grip? There must be some method to check for the correct grip to make sure it is not too small or too large. Again, don't tell me what feels comfortable. This is not rocket science but there has to be some method besides what feels good.

If you're a right handed golfer then the fit is based on your left hand on the grip.

 

Your middle finger and ring finger should be just resting on the 'fleshy' part of you thumb. If they don't reach then the grip is too big. If they really dig in then the grip is too small.

 

As far as the right hand goes, that really is personal preference i'm afraid. Some players like more tape under the lower half of their grip so that they don't turn the right hand over too much. At the same time, some shafts will make the grip bigger in the right hand anyway due to the way they're tapered.

I use a cross handed grip on my putter. How would that affect my choice in getting a larger grip size? What grip manufacture/model would you recommend?

If you're talking about putter grips, that's completely different mate. There's no way to 'fit' them to your hand size. Some people use massive grips (Miguel Angel Jimenez) to keep the hands 'quiet' and some people use tiny grips (Tiger) to 'feel' the putter.

 

This is slightly different if you putt cross handed though. You very rarely see small grips as you're not trying to feel the putter as much, you're focussing more on the stroke. It's not for me to tell you what to use but if you look at the majority of cross handed putters on tour, chances are you'll see them using something like a Lamkin Crossline Paddle.
