Need a little help w long irons

Seem to be chunking them

I used to be a great long iron player. I could hit a high 3-iron that was straight and solid. Here recently I have been chunking the long irons. I will pinch one just right every once in a while and it will go in the right direction but not solid and not the distances I am used to. I think it might be a deceleration problem but I wanted some input from you guys.

The release and follow through is critical with long irons, unlike short irons and wedges were you can shorten the follow through. I had the same problem before. I was hitting so many controlled short irons that when i needed to hit a long iron i would used the same swing and i wouldn't make decent contact. So on long irons, don't forget to release and follow through.

Could it be the wrists are just a tad too flippy, slight loss of control at the top?

 

This is the first place I look when the swing bottoms out behind the ball.

Get yourself some hybrids......hehehe.......you'll NEVER regret it!

 

Could be a simple ball position error.....thats the first thing I would check.......

 

It also sounds like your arms are out of synch in the backswing and your trying to catch them up in the downswing.......you can get away with it hitting short irons/mid irons, but, NOT with long irons........to stike a long iron properly a player MUST have the correct angle of attack, a clubhead that is accelerating, and a ball that is positioned properly for the lie/type of grass......Bermuda is a b**** to hit long irons off of......IF the iron isn't struck VERY cleanly you'll hit fat/snagged decelerated irons all day long.......

 

Check your ball position.....if its fundamentally sound then try and hit some "punch" 4 irons......"knock downs"........then once you can do that successfully gravitate to full long iron shots........you then should be able to hit your long irons much more successfully.....

Sounds like you're just a little steep.

 

Stand a bit futher away from the ball and close your stance a bit, it will force you to shallow out the swing a bit. As the feel comes back, get back to a normal stance.
