The key and winner will come from the guy that controls and limits damage on the back 9. If you play the back 9 well at Troon, you'll have a damn good chance of being there or thereabouts on Sunday. The front 9 is straight forward and we should see lots of Birdies, so most should play that 9 well. But some big scores can be had on that back 9 with the prevailing wind in your face. So if you score well on the front 9, and just hang on in there and play a solid back 9 each day, then you'll have a great chance. With DJ's length and accuracy off the tee it has to be an enormous advantage. But there are plenty of guys who can hit it plenty far and straight. But in my opinion, the Tournament will be won and lost on that back 9, which can be vicious if the wind stays true to form.

As long as Old Grumpy misses cut, I'm Happeee,.. as Pharrell Williams. I'll make a video of my dance and post it here if he does.

I guessed right on DJ for US Open. Think it's time for Spieth now, unfortunately. He seems to have got his swing together decently and he should have learned something about links golf and links greens last year.

Admittedly, I have not seen much of Troon. How is it, compared to the other courses in the Open course rotation?

As with most Links Courses, it's so very weather dependent and getting a favourable draw. I know that sounds a little unfair to the guys who can get bad draws, but it's just how it's always been I'm afraid. As I said, the front 9 is generally downwind and plays as easy as it gets for an Open venue only around 3400 yards, but the back 9 can be an absolute beast with the prevailing wind in ones face and is around 3700 yards. I'm not sure how it's going to be set up this year in detail, but we've had a hell of a lot of rain the last few weeks, so the chances are that the rough will be extremely thick and lush. I can't see the fairways playing mega fast. Sure, as with all Links Fairways they will still be firm as always but certainly not bone hard, which makes them wider in theory. But the Fairways are inherently on the tighter side around Troon compared to some Open venues. Holes 10, 11,12, 15 are all long pars 4's 438,490, 431,472 yards respectively and with the wind in ya face they all play over 500! and 17 is a real tough Par 3 at 222y with the wind into and off the left can be a scorecard wrecker too. Lots of birdies on the front 9 and potential disasters on the back 9. If you can shoot level par for all for 4 rounds on the back 9, you'd be damn close come Sunday evening.

Translating that into Spieth chances, a Texan will have no problems with windy conditions, supposedly. I remember Leonard commenting on the windy conditions when he beat Jesper in the Open, that it was another day at work for him, that he was used to far higher winds.

The tighter fairways and thick rough might cause problems for Jordan if he has bad swing days,

I hear what you're saying about Spieth being a Texan and used to wind. Unfortunately it doesn't always necessarily work out like that. The wind out on Links Courses in Scotland is a very different wind. It's kinda 'heavy' and gets right inside the body and is totally different to how many people would imagine it to be. In addition to that, on that basis Colin Montgomerie should have won numerous Open Championships having been brought up at Royal Troon, unfortunately for him, it never really worked out for him. Of course, it could be 'dead calm' all week and the Course will play easier, who knows! My guess would be that the weather will be changeable and a little unsettled so the draw comes into play as a vital component for any winner. Personally, I'd like a late tee time on the first day, as the wind often drops in the late afternoon, so allowing the late starters to get off to good starts on the first day. Equally, the weather can be very fickle, but one thing is for sure it will play a part one way or the other.

Spieth has shown that he can play well in a wide variety of courses and conditions. He did pretty well in the British last year as I recall and I doubt the weather will be worse this year than last year.

If the rough is thick and fairways are narrow, that will cause problems for him, unless he makes some progress in fixing his swing.
