Schaumburg/Medinah area golf courses

I'll be heading to Chicago and be staying near the Medinah CC for 4 days in the first week of August. What are some good courses within about half an hour of the area that aren't too expensive but are still enjoyable? All input is appreciated.

Not sure about the exact driving distance, but I would imagine that Medinah would put you within half hour striking distance of lots of good courses such as Cantigny, Highlands of Elgin, Bowes Creek, Prairie Landing.

Cantigny = expensive (I guess twilight isn't bad, but it's a death march then), it's ok but doesn't get me excited.

Bowes = overrated, play Highlands

Prairie Landing = expensive

Highlands of Elgin is sick, but that drive time could be right on the border (not sure). Schaumburg Golf Club I hear isn't terrible. Village Links of Glen Ellyn is a good layout, high in the moderate price range, Bridges of Poplar Creek, Klein Creek, Indian Lakes (get it while you can!). Those may be cheaper/closer.

Cantigny is usually ranked the best public course but as stated it may be more than you are looking to spend at around $100. I think Bowes is one of the best courses in Chicago and you can get it for $60 a lot of the time. HOE is a good course. Lower range but still decent courses Bridges of poplar creek and Orchard Valley.

Orchard Valley is going to be a hike from where he is, no? Also, hasn't it been in garbage shape like the last four years?

Schaumburg golf club is in fantastic condition this year. Highlands of Elgin was a treat to play. Great links style. Same with Praire Landing. I've found a lot of Golf Now deals for the $30-40 range there.

sorry, didn't see the part about price. As others have mentioned, Cantigny is over $100. Highlands of Elgin or Schaumburg are probably your best bet all things considered.

Fox Run Golf Links isn't a bad little course. I'd also consider Mount Prospect GC, although some folks don't care for it post-renovation.

Maple Meadows is reasonable for the price.

It's :30 from medinah. As far as condition I can't speak first hand but I have played with multiple people who said it was in good shape this year and haven't seen any bad reviews in the Chicago thread here.

I've always wanted to play Elgin, so I'll for sure be heading over there. Indian Lakes looks like a nice track as well, and last time I played Schaumburg I enjoyed, so I'll probably head back since it seems to be in good condition. Any more input is greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

I played Indian Lakes today - for the $30 we were charged it was fine, lots of fun holes but it was starting to ride the fence on being a dog track.

With the course closing at the end of the season, I can't imagine maintenance is going to be a high priority.

That's why we got out there asap, we figured at this point the current day is the best shape that course is going to be in for the remainder of it's life.
