Cleveland 588 MT Irons...Any thoughts?

Good evening all,

I just picked up a "brand new" set of old stock Cleveland 588 MT irons and I was curious (OF COURSE) of the WRX-universe's overall experience/s with the irons?

Theyre pretty forgiving gi. I actually carry the 3 n 4 as driving irons

Funny you ask this, as I also just purchased a new set of MT irons for no real reason, other than they were cheap and I've always wanted to give them a go. I took them out tonight, and I must say, I really liked them. Very forgiving, and very straight. Stock stiff shaft was nice, and high launch without ballooning.

For now, I am going to give them a run. Going out on the course at night and just knocking the ball around is one thing. I'll try to report back how they do in my weekend rounds coming up this weekend.

Ok, for the few people who might care about my findings with the MT irons, I will actually follow up on my pledge to report back on my findings... The MT irons are totally legit irons. I played very good golf with them in two rounds this weekend. Off the fairway, out of the rough, off the tee, they did pretty much everything I asked of them. The stock stiff shafts work well for me. Bottom line, they're some generations old and they won't win any beauty contests, but in the GI iron universe, one can do much worse than the MT irons IMHO.

Thanks for the follow up Jeffrey!!! I purchased the irons on a whim after seeing them brand new for a really good deal. I wasn't really looking for irons as I'm content with my current setup (Ping i15 irons). However, I'm not playing as much and I'm looking for more forgivness. Cleveland has underrated equipment so I figured I'd give them a try. Can't wait to try them out.

Imo the short and mid irons have a thick top line and the sole is too wide to control the ball flight. The long irons though are money. Long, soft, straight and forgiving. The fact that they found their way to a majority of Cleveland/Srixon staffers says a lot. Even with their oversize blade! They have mostly been replaced by the ZU45 but they are fine long irons/driving irons and, like most Cleveland golf equipment, they are quite inexpensive.

Yeah, I don't really mind that extra heft in the mid-short irons. It's like playing the Ping G10/15/20 irons, which are chunky right through the whole set. I still have a set of G10's, and I feel I should throw darts with the PW and UW in particular. With the MT irons, same thing--the PW and DW (gap wedge) set up nicely behind the ball for me, and I was attacking some pins with them.

Anyway, in the end, the MT irons fill a GI niche, and to be frank, can be seamlessly blended with the TT short and mid irons if one wishes to. The Callaway XR irons that I was playing were very good but not blowing me away, so I'll continue to see what the MT irons can do, or go back to the XR's.
