When does the golf season end on Long Island?

I may be moving back to Long Island after 14 years in Florida and i'm curious how long you can play these days? It used to be you could play comfortably in decent conditions may thru mid october. Am i really facing a 6+ month off season? What do you do over those months?

You can play as long as you like if the cold weather doesn't bother you. However, being from Florida, not so sure about the cold. Nevertheless, the first good snow storm would probably be it.

If i can golf regularly april thru november on LI thats not bad then make a few trips dec thru march. Im thinking april and november there will be just a handful of decent golfing days.

that's usually the case, april and November you get a couple of good days. after thanksgiving last year was really nice out. april is generally pretty full. my first rounds are usually the first day of march madness

Since the weather has been warmer the past few years. I've played some courses all the way till Christmas. Earliest start of the season, I played in February a few times, and March, but that all depends on wind and weather. Some courses are still in great condition... Some really don't care for the greens.

Depends on the course.

Past couple of years, the cold weather hasn't really started until after X-Mas. So, you figure (depending on the course & the severity of the winter) to play from early March all the way to about near or almost end of December.

As mentioned by somebody else, first major/massive snowstorm & you will call it the end until there's almost no trace of ice/snow on the respective course.

If there's grass showing you can usually find a course that is open like Clearview.

Pretty much comes down to cold tolerance. I've always found that fairway conditions are pretty much unchanged until the first prolonged snow cover, which can be as late as Christmas/January some years. I've played in hail on New Year's Eve and I've also played on New Year's Day when it was 60 degrees out (a few years ago). To date the coldest round I've ever experienced was the day after Thanksgiving.

 

Once there's been snow cover, the grounds gets mushy and conditions deteriorate. Still, to me golf season really only ends when a blizzard or two pretty much shut it down by force.

Id say normally Christmas, however, out east you can play a bit longer. I played Montauk Downs in February by myself and the course was in great shape and decently warm (about 50*)

Depends on your tolerance for cold weather. I played until late December last year and started playing in late February and got out in Feb/Mar when there was no snow on the ground. Generally play public golf from November to March since the greens at my club are closed and temp greens are not worth playing in the cold.
