2 Training Aids That Have Really Helped Me

Wedge

Recommended Posts

I still have, and use, Dr Wiren's, the Power Swing Fan. Should I have felt a need for it, I would've also gotten a Medicus. (Golf lessons took care of that)

The only two gadgets I own are the Swing Fan and the weighted doughnut.

I'm not knocking any of the "Training Aids" out there, I just don't think that I'd be using any, for long periods of time, IMHO.

I'm a big Kelvin Miyahira fan and he doesn't think too highly of the Orange Whip as he thinks it promotes flipping the club through impact.

For me...the best training aid is one I recently rediscovered a few weeks ago as it was collecting dust in my basement..

A Swing Fan

Although I had a lot more compression of the ball at impact with my irons and woods and struggled to get the correct sequence of my body movements of the downswing...sometimes I don't quite get it and sometimes I nailed it. One day I was bored and dusted off the swing fan and took a few swings with it and it overexaggerated the correct movements of my body on the downswing and when I transfered it to my clubs, I got compression and accuracy. Instead of gathering dust I now swing it around 10-20 times a day to give my body the muscle memory it needs when I transfer it to the driving range or before a round.

totally off topic but you started it! i take lessons from kelvin when i can (which is every 2 years to get to hawaii) and he has transformed my game. outrageously effective. anyway, don't you think 'hold' is a misnomer? at 105mph or (130 for victor) it's not physically possible or accurate. rather, it's proper biomex that enables you to maintain clubface control/angles and avoid ee, flip, etc...

the minute i stopped trying to 'hold' is the minute everything clicked (and my golfers/tennis elbows healed).

what do you think?

Absolutely. Trying to hold is the worst thing you can do. Such a misnomer trying to "hold the angle" or achieving a photographic position during downswing. Lag and the correct positions should happen naturally. Research Jimmy Ballard or watch George Knudson's swing or videos. Let go to get control. Not the opposite. Good luck.

To me when I interpret "Drive and Hold" it's not about holding angles, that is impossible because of physics. Holding off is preventing the clubface to turn over and have it square through impact as long as possible.

When Victor Rodriguez was still trying to learn Miyahira's moves, he said he wanted to prevent the clubface to be ahead of his lead hand as long as possible.

This is a great example of that, he really holds off the clubface from flipping over in this video..

nice. Incredible really. I made huge progress but stopped short of going that far really due to body limitations. I'm fit at 50 but it led to tennis/golf elbows and I found the limits of what my hips can do. I talked to kelvin about it but no stopping aging.

Anyway, where I ended up with is probably getting more weight lead-side (I'm guessing it's more than 60 as opposed to Victor's 40) and just focus on getting more back and up with my lead side. Anyway, I hit the ball straighter and longer then the local pros 15 years younger than me and pain free. So, I'm happy with that! There is a lot to be gained with Kelvin's teaching.

I have three swing trainers: Ledbetter swing setter, Medicus knock off and the weighted club. Each has a purpose as others have said and I'm looking forward to getting the 1xei training aid along with a hitting net and mat. Over the years I have found the basic broom to be a very useful and effective swing trainer.

I purchased a new Medicus ArmMaster a year ago for $15. As part of the purchase they encourage you to register on their site to get updates and free instructional videos. Little did I know, they start charging you $9.95 per month for the “free” instructional videos.

I did some searching on the net and found quite a few others who had experienced the same thing. This is bad business practice and deceitful on the part of Medicus.

I would encourage everyone to boycott their products as there are very good alternatives out there.

I would love for someone from Medicus to comment on this post.

I bought the older design (2016) orange Speed Stik. Loved it. But, as mentioned above, the movable plastic weighted magnet section cracked. They were very quick to send me another newer version, the red model. It is terrible. The magnets are not nearly as strong. With the old orange model I use to be able to have it "snap" at the bottom of the swing when using the strongest setting of 5. Helped my game a lot. With the new red model I can't keep it from "snapping" way too early at the highest 5 setting. It is very, very, very different from the older model. I called Speed Stik and they sent me another new red model. Same problem. I called and talked to the company and they said they have a newer system coming out soon. (No surprise, since this new one is worthless.) Would I be able to have one of them sent to replace this terrible new model? No. So, old model broke (many saw this happen). New model a waste of metal and magnets. Do not waste your money.
