Teaching my son to golf

Shandy G

Recommended Posts

Anyone here have any cool websites that I can reference. I have been working with him because I can't afford lessons. He is 8 and loves golf, and practices at it alot. He is actually the one that got me playing again. I thought it would be important to atleast try and teach him some basic stuff like grip and stance. He is a great student, but I am not a PGA golf teacher. Anything I can use to help him a long. He already has a beautiful swing and seems to understand what is being taught. Any suggestions?

Check out your local county/municipal summer programs. Often, as here in Florida and elsewhere, they offer youth golf lessons free to residents, if not free then for a very nominal fee. Also check out your local/regional AJGA as your son is 8 now, starting age is 7, and don't forget to look into the local/regional Drive/Chip & Putt contests. All this info is available via the internet...I hope that this helps, Take care/Safe day...J

check out your local "First Tee" program. they have inexpensive if not free programs for kids. i volunteer with our local program and they really have a lot to offer.

otherwise...the only book i ever look at is "Ben Hogan's Five Lessons".

I think the 1st Tee programs vary in quality of instruction quite a bit depending on local chapter. Around these parts, it's obvious to me that they really don't emphasize swing mechanics and fundamentals as much as you would probably care for. 1st Tee is a great program to socialize your kid with other like minded golfers his age but if you want serious instruction, you'll probably have to go elsewhere.

BTW, excellent advice on "5 Lessons" My Bible as well (although it has it's share of flaws).

First thing I'd do is teach him that golf is not a verb! :russian_roulette:

".....to golf" ????? :)

sorry, golf is also a verb.

To the original poster. Keep the game fun. Most kids are coordinated enough that as long as the play enough they will figure most of it out on their own.

I second checking into your local First Tee program. It is a wonderful concept/program. :)

FANTASTIC program for building character in a person.........NOT so good for learning the golf swing.......the quality of instruction varys wildly from chapter to chapter......in fact, The First Tee has GREATLY DE-emphasized "golf instruction"/"producing good golfers" since Joe Louis Barrow took over 6 or 7 years ago........it's now almost 100% "Life Skill" based with golf instruction a VERY distant 2nd......but, IF your local chapter has a QUALITY instructor attached to it then simply by "association" your child will learn to swing the club in a fundamentally sound manner.........

PLEASE understand, this is by no means a "diss" of The First Tee program as I'm a VERY strong believer in it, but, it IS the reality in regards to their golf instruction, etc........however, ANY exposure to our game can't help but create a person of high character and morals with some developing into good players......

I've been brain washing my son since he was 4 years old. I take him to the range , keep balls and clubs all over the house and he goes to bed every night with the Golf Channel on. He loves golf and never misses an opportunity to swing his clubs. Keep the game right in front of him would be my recomendation.

please don't be surprised when he rebels and never picks up a golf club again. not that it's a sure thing, but every kid likes what their parents like. how many teenagers do you know that still like what their parents like?

fair warning.

They almost ALL do provided they aren't FORCED to do it........BIG difference between GIVING your child an OPPORTUNITY and FORCING them to do something......... :)

Exactly. I'm not forcing my kid to do anything. He begs me to go to the range. He's my best friend and anything I do he has to be part of. He had his first birdie this past Spring. 106 yards and his drive hit the flagstick , 1 footer for birdie. He also marks his ball , invisions every shot behind the ball and can tell you the 4 Majors and fly through golf terminology.

Oh by the way I still like what my parents like. I was drug to the lake when I was a kid and water skiing was our family thing. I now live on the lake and still love it. I also grew up in a 50 year old family business and my son is involved in the business at 6 years old.

My favorite memories from my younger days almost ALL involved my father and hunting, fishing, or golf........and he introduced me to all 3 and they've become (and still are to this day), along with my family, my life's passions........MY 9 year old son is the EXACT same way......... :russian_roulette:

thats awsome. . .

although, just to qualify, I wasn't saying there isn't anyone who likes what their parents like, I was saying there aren't very many TEENAGERS who like what their parents like. I think the way it came out sounded a bit harsh, but I never thought you were forcing anything. I wish every day that I had taken up the game when I was much younger, instead of finding it now at 23-24. theres never anything wrong with spending time with your kid(s), thats for sure.
