if during tryouts your going to be walking. do the same when practicing. buy a yardage book if they have one and then study it. measure additional yardages ie. length of the bunkers yardage not listed in the book and if you have range finder double check all the yardage on the book and course. if don't have a yardage book, make your own. once you got all your homework out of the way try and play with others that will be trying out and make wagers to help develop your mental aspect of the game.

IMHO knowing the course is important, but being able to play just as well or better during crunch time is the most difficult thing to do.

look back from the green at every hole and determine where the smartest place to hit it is, and what is the best way to play the hole to give yourself an good score most often. Also write down what clubs you are going to hit off each tee, and find out if putts tend to break in a common direction. Thats pretty much what i do for tournaments

Oh yeah. Like I said earlier w/ the playing two balls. If you miss a put due to a tricky break or slope. Make a mental note of that. And even if you cant play the course alot. go to the course and practice putting on THEIR greens. you cant play at your course preparing for greens that read a 12 or something like that if you practice on a 8-10

whenever i play a new course, i force myself to play for more break than i normally would.

maybe i underread the break on most putts at new courses, but this seems to help.

Play the course a lot between now and tryouts. Take a lot of notes every time you play and look at them often so they are ingrained in your memory. Know what club you would hit on the par 3s and practice those shots. Also, go on the range and pretend you are playing the course, like what would you hit on the 1st hole, then your second shot and so on. The best thing like everyone said is to get your short game down. If you have a solid game, playing on a new course should be no biggy but preperation helps. Oh yes and relax.

Next month I have golf tryouts and I plan on playing the course alot this month and I was wondering any tips or methods you guys use while practicing a course for a tourny or tryout?

Besides the obvious of getting yardages to hazards, you need to look at the hole in the respect of where NOT to hit it. Look at the approach shot, and ask yourself, "if I'm going to miss a shot, where should it be?". Some holes will be obvious, some will depend on the pin position.

Many people say to visualize how you would have played the hole looking backwards at it, from the green.

If you have time, learn which greens are tricky to read, and make a lot of notes about those greens as far as direction of the break.

When I was a kid I had the opportunity to watch one of the first senior events. Well I watched there practice rounds and they hit putts across the greens in a circle fashion why well the pins are going to be tucked you see and a lot of those guy's planning on hitting the middle of the green(not pin seeking).

I also like the idea of playing two balls different shots different clubs off rge tee's.

good luck

If you're trying to learn a course, try to find your sight lines off tees, figure out what clubs you're going to hit off the tees and where you want to hit it. Learn the greens as well as you can so you know where the slopes are and how they react to different approach shots i.e., high and low draws/fades, will it release or hold, etc. Figure out where you want to miss, if you do (and you will), and practice shots from those areas. Learn the speeds of the greens, general break, and find out the local knowledge.

Play the course from the spots you want to hit the ball, not the trouble spots because you want to focus on the spot you want to hit the ball, not the other way around. Try to learn the course and then just play the course so you can get comfortable with it.

my routine consists of focusing on placement and paractice from places that i might mis hit and land into better to get a feel of those areas to know what may happen but my focus is around the greens cause thats where most courses put their signatures get the speed and feel for where they slope and like most people said keeping a yardage book and keep notes of your own
