What to do 10-20 yards off the green?

In my short game it seems like these shots are causing the most trouble. I just don't know how to play these shots. Do you play it like a chip or do you play it like a pitch. If anyone could tell me what I could try on these shots that would be great.

WAY too many possibilities! The answer is...it depends. Is there danger (sand, water, etc.) in front of the pin position? Is it an elevated green? How does it slope (back to front, front to back)? What is the condition of the lie? Where is the pin placed (tucked tight closer to my position or back of the green)? I might play anything from a bump-and-run to a full flop depending on the combination of the above conditions.

I have trouble with every type of shot in the 10-20 yard range.

But the worse of them all is when I have to go up a huge hill to get to the green.

There are many ways you can play the shot. It all depends on the condition. For a hill, depends on where the tee location is, you can pitch it using 60' wedge. In conclusion, it all really depends on the condition.

Try to get a lesson, because the group telling you this will have a million ways to do it and without seeing every one executed, it's goning to be awful hard to teach you what you need to know.

The fundamental difference in the schools of thought are twofold:

 

One Club vs. Many Clubs and Fly it versus Roll it to the hole.

 

People will generally either use one club for all their shots around the green, or an assortment from the 7 iron through the wedges.

 

Most teachers tell you that it is best to get the ball on the ground as soon as possible in a chip, as you will be more consistent with your distance that way, but it's not universal.

 

I'd tell you to pick whichever method you feel most comfortable with and stick to it, and practice, practice , practice it on a chipping/putting green if you have one available.

I have to agree with the consensus. There are too many variables, for example:

• Tight lie with lots of green to work with?
  
• Deep in heavy rough and hitting over a bunker to a tight pin?
  
• Down hill lie?
  
• Up hill lie?
  

I use anything from my 5-hybrid on down to lob wedge. It all depends. I agree that a short-game lesson would be in order. You can learn a lot in a one hour lesson.

For a while I've had alot of success chipping everything with 56 wedge, just varying stroke length and speed to some degree. Once you start getting a little further out though I can normally repeat the same theory with a higher lofted clup(51, 47(PW)) and have good success until about 30 yards out.
