Reshafting a Titleist D2

Can my local clubfitter do it? (More)

Hey all,

I wouldn't have even considered that Titleist heads posed a bit of a problem when it comes to shaft-swapping if it weren't for this forum. Good stuff here!

So, since I've read grumblings about swapping a shaft in a Titleist head, with its bore-through design, hossel sizings, etc., I'm wondering if my local shop (Golfdom in King of Prussia, PA), that does fitting on-site, can handle pulling my Aldila and putting in a ProForce.

If the answer is something like "Well, does the guy doing it know what he's doing?" then I'd have to look into it further -- but they sell Titleist clubs, and, for the sake of argument, I'll assume they know what they're doing there. Perhaps my question should be more along the lines of "Do I need to send the club to Titleist for this swap, or can any competent fitter do this?"

Also, assuming that the fitter is good, will the pulled shaft be reuseable? Or, is it often rendered no good after a pull from this head? (I appologize in advance for my lack of knowledge on this matter.)

Based on my conversations with both a clubfitter and the Titleist Repair dept, it is definitely possible to reshaft a 907 locally. It does not have the same sleeve that the 905 series had, which when heated could sometimes slip of the head, and come along with the shaft. Evidently, this is not how the 907 is constructed, and I have confirmed that with Titleist.

The aluminum sleeve is now threaded in the D1/D2s. Before they were not and were borderline impossible. You still need to deal with the flush bore through, which a good club maker can. DO NOT let them do a blind bore which is where they will leave the a portion of the old shaft in so they don't have to deal with the flush sole.

BTW, if the club fitter has a graphite shaft puller, the pulled shaft should be just fine.

Is the "blind bore" practice a common thing, or something only a not-very-good/lazy/cheap fitter would do? I will make sure that I tell them not to do a blind bore!

Blind bore is a common practise among good competent club builder to achieve certain flex to pin point the players need in achieving flex and kick point of the shaft by inserting partially or full bore.

 

Nothing wrong w/ this practise as long as they know how to do it properly using and old tip shaft cut of. I will bet anybody that no one can tell if i did full bore by looking at the sole finish after reshafting it.

 

This blind bore are the same thing as if they are a normal bore design head such as TM heads. Filling up the rest of the bore using an old shaft cut of are just to make cosmetically looks like it's factory finish.

 

Due to Titleist bore through head design, certain shaft company have an option also on 48" raw ( ie: Fujikura TW. MW and BW series ) instead of normal 46" raw to play as a normal flex versus 46 in full bore will flex stiffer than normal.

 

The key here is on a club fitter/ club builder that can give you advice on the fitting process to finalise on how he will build your club to fit your swing profile. How good he can finish his work cosmetically is going to be another aspect of good club builder.
