I felt like this was a necessity because while many of you love the game few of you seem to be as crazy as I am about the game- so I dedicate this post to the crazy ones.

 

How crazy am I...a small taste.

 

I started playing golf 15 years ago (I am currently 43). My first round my father-in-law beat me by over 40 strokes. I decided that i was either going to be good at the game or never play again so I worked on it and within 2 years I was a high single digit handicapper.

 

In 2008 I became a bit bored with the game so I gave up modern equipment and started playing with clubs from the early 1900's (Hickory shafted clubs) and played them to a single digit handicap for 4 years including my first ever trip to play the great courses of Scotland. I shot a 75 at the Old Course with 90 year old clubs.

 

In the economic downturn I was buying when people were selling and I purchased the majority of my collection of Golf antiquities - which at the time included a club owned and used by Bobby Jones in his prime, a bronze bust of Bobby Jones made for Jones himself it is #1 or 9 made...and #2 of 9 sits in the trophy room of Augusta National. I had Walter Hagen's 1929 Ryder Cup Bag that he then used to win his last major the 1929 Open Championship. I purchased George HW Bush's Presidential Golf Bag (stars and stripes with his signature and the Seal of the President). I also believe I have the oldest score card known to exist. And a ton of pre-1900 golf artwork and a set of clubs that date between 1860-1870.

 

Regarding modern times: I have 12-15 pairs of golf shoes, estimating 40'pairs of golf pants and will play any club that can be proven to fit my game better.

 

I am a golf nut to the extreme.

 

If you are crazy please join me. It doesn't have to be to my extreme- I think about golf more than 50% of my day for instance...

Holy schmoley that's a ton of modern equipment. Play them or keep them and why?

Just an FYI I purchased all of those items for pennies on the dollar during the recession. I am by no means rich. I was however savvy enough to buy things when they were cheap.

I've spent enough on racing to pay for memberships at some of the finest courses in the country, with nothing to show for it. I have only played 5 rounds of golf in 2017 and have purchased two new sets of irons in the last 2 1/2 weeks.

 

It's 11:25pm PST and I'm eating cheese with Drambuie on ice whilst posting on WRX with Battle Island loading on my smart phone.

If you are serious I could connect you with the right people. I have had three amazing Hickory play sets in my Hickory days-

 

My Pre-1900 Musselburgh Play set which i have used in Gutty Golf Tournaments like the National Hickory Championship and the All American Hickory Open.

 

My Mint Tom Stewart RTJ Iron Set - an identical version of the set Bobby Jones used to win the Grand Slam.

 

My major champions play set- each club coming from either a personal play club of a major champion or from their pro shop...personal clubs from Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Tommy Armour etc...

 

You don't have to go that crazy but I can find you a great play set.
