List to play in San Diego next week

DaVinciGolf

Recommended Posts

Headed to San Diego next week and I’m hoping to play 5 courses while I’m there. Some friends there have given me a list of courses to play, but I don’t think they play much so I’m skeptical of their recommendations. I have a list of nine, so I need to get rid of 4 courses from my list. Are some of these places goat ranches? What should I get rid of?

Torrey

Coronado

Mt. Woodson

Carlton Oaks

Steele Canyon

East Lake

Salt Creek

Sycuan

Admiral Baker

I added Torrey to the list, but I think I want to take it off. I’m not long and my game isn’t too good. I don’t want to spend a lot of money to be miserable.

Thoughts?

Go back to California and go down 9 posts to the one called "San Diego", it's all there.

FYI, Salt Creek and Eastlake punched their greens two weeks ago. Carlton Oaks punched their greens last week.

If it was me, it would be Coronado, Steele Canyon, Sycuan's Willow, Adm. Baker North, and for something short and pretty, Mt. Woodson. If you can get into Costco, you can get deals at Steele Canyon and Sycuan. Good luck! :-)

Sir, you will enjoy it very much if you can get in. I just came back from SD/Torrey Pines trip. One of the best courses I have played and I have played some nice courses in my life time.

TS3 9.5
R11 17.5*
RBZ Stage 2 21.5*(21*) & 24.5*(24*)
MP53 5-7
MP4 8-PW
Studio Newport 2.5
MP T11 50* 55* 60*

Mt Woodson has great views but if your game is off, it's unforgiving. Do Torrey Coronado Sycuan Steele Admiral Baker North. I like Steele but it's overpriced imo. Torrey is too, but it's Torrey.

I think The Crossings is actually the top of my list. Above all of these.

Boulder oaks is a nice course but play early as it gets hot and sometimes slow.

Sorry, but there is no known universe where Boulder Oaks would be considered a "nice course". They took a really crappy course in Meadow Lake and made a lot of money from turf reduction rebates, turning it into something that makes Goat Hill seem like Augusta National by comparison. It might be one thing for a local to knock around for a dirt cheap round, but to recommend it for visitors to the area - no way! If someone followed that advice they'd leave thinking "wow, if that's considered a nice San Diego course I'd hate to see the average courses in the area!"

Shoot, you're right! Thanks for correcting me. I meant Woods Valley...for some reason I always confuse the two and I don't know why. Boulder oaks was in very poor shape when I played it last year.

LOL, glad to hear you were thinking of something different! If you truly thought Boulder Oaks was a nice course, I think WRX would have to revoke your log in privileges.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all the info guys. Thought I’d report the results.

Only got 4 rounds in, but I did get my money’s worth in every one of them.

Torrey – just beautiful – glad I did it – All 101 whacks.

Coronado – least interesting of the courses, but glad I played it – It was foggy most of the round so not as scenic as I had hoped, but the wind was nonexistent/minor the whole round - 90 whacks.

Steele Canyon (Canyon/Ranch) – really like this course – I was surprised by the elevation changes from tee to green (played like a mountain course) – 91 whacks and 3 lost balls.

The Crossings – I was again surprised by the elevation changes – the place is just massive (acreage) – 100 whacks – 6 lost balls (3 in the first 2 holes).

Four rounds, on new to me courses, without control of the driver was close to miserable – but still a good experience. I was also not prepared for dew (we don’t have many mornings with dew) or the altitude change (my nice easy 8 iron at altitude is a big assed 7 at sea level).

Again, thanks for the info. I’m headed back in December so I’ll need a new list.

Wow. This is a very ironic but interesting post for me. I'm traveling to San Diego in 2 weeks for 2 days. Friday 10/27 and Saturday 10/28.

I'm playing Torrey Saturday morning and looking for a 2nd course to play on Friday.

Any suggestions? I'm a 5 handicap that can play from any tee box.

Lot's of choices and there are some good recommendations in the various San Diego threads, but I'd suggest you look into Maderas. They recently shut down for a week for fall maintenance and the course is in quite nice shape right now, probably even better in a couple weeks. Try it from the green tees, which gives a good test of all parts of your game. There is also a really good Underpar deal right now for $99 with free replay; the deal expires 10/31 so your timing is perfect.

Normally I'd also recommend Barona, but they've had some conditioning issues this summer. They also shut down for a week about a month ago, but I haven't played it since to see its condition.

I played Torrey South two weeks ago; they do a nice job of making it a resort like experience but maybe I'm spoiled but the tee boxes and grass conditions in general made me wonder where the $380/round went. The scenery is amazing, the ocean backdrop is nearly Pebble but the grass conditions are not close.

One tip, the ball ALWAYS breaks to the Ocean, even when it is tilting away, unbelievable.

Torrey is cheaper than Maderas.

They've had a groupon deal out for a little while now. It's like $229 for two players or $439 for four. Only downside is that you can only use the groupon after 10am on the weekends (still not bad at all).

Playing there next Sunday.
