Anyone use impact tape at the range?

A couple of range sessions ago, I was using impact tape on my irons and driver. It showed me that I am really hitting my irons on the sweet spot about 95% of the time, that's a big reason why my iron game has gotten really good. Also showed that I am hitting driver on the sweet spot about 85% if the time. It really helped 'cause I know my slice is caused by an open face, not because I'm toeing the ball.

 

Anyway, the problem is, the tape is pretty much useless after a couple three hits. I picked it up at Dick's pretty cheap. Can anyone recommend a more durable tape? Is there any that like wipes off or can be used for multiple hits?

There was some thread I just read on latest golf inventions/innovations or something like that. Some show/contest on the Golf channel? One of the things was re-usable impact tape... maybe in a year or two? :lol:

 

My clubs are really clean. When I go to the range and want to check that I can see the ball imprint on the face each time. It's subtle but visible. Wipe/rub it off with your thumb each shot and I don't need tape. The tape is a lot more obvious though.

Heh, just popped up on a different thread. Someone said maybe Golfsmith spoiled the show ending since one of the products on the show showed up in the Golfsmith catalog (I guess the show hasn't finished yet on the Golf channel). GolfWRX is great :lol:

True, my clubs are always clean before a range session, and I can definitely see the ball marks on the clubs, especially on my driver. heh...the range I use has a couple of club washers, I'll have to use them more often, and use a wet towel to wash the marks off my driver face.

Well, I'm definitely not hitting the ball on the heel when I slice. The few marks I get on the heel are when I smother hook it.

 

 

Most of the ball marks are somewhere between the markings on the face of the driver, just higher or lower. Many are right in the center. It seems like I'm coming over the top, my lower body is outracing my upper body, and while I'm hitting the ball in the center of the face, the face is still slightly open. I know if I can get the face square at impact I can start bombing a few.

We used impact tape on my club at my club fitting and when I was hitting practice shots, 99% of them were on the toe. Most of the shots were very slight fades to outright slices. According to the swing monitor I was using an outside in swing, so that explains the spin and direction, but I would imagine hitting it off the heel would most likely produce a hook or a draw.

The ball is on the club face for such a short amount of time that deflection of the club face from the off center hit has little effect on the ball's initial trajectory or flight. Isn't it that swing path primarily determines initial trajectory and face open or closed relative to swing path determines flight (draw or fade)?

You can try black electrical tape. It certainly is cheaper! Put two strips across the face. It will show your marks....

Right -- a toe hit only hooks or slices if the clubface is closed or open, or if the path is in or out. If anything, a toe hit will cause the ball to draw slightly (not hook) due to the gear effect. Gear effect is not such a big worry in irons due to the high loft, as compared to woods and hybrids.

 

Toe strikes are distance robbers, and are the number one benefit that derives from a "game improvement" iron -- such clubs have a higher MOI and a COG farther toward the toe. The GI iron will not lose so much distance from a toe strike.
